This is a complete family tree of the Elves and Men in Tolkien's Middle-earth!

Every reader of "The Lord of the Rings" and especially "The Silmarillion" is overwhelmed by a vast number of names and relations. The connections between the inhabitants of Tolkien's world are so complex that one easily loses orientation.

So I decided to draw a family tree some years ago. It started with the main linage from Thingol down to Aragorn. Then it grew. And grew. Alone the protagonists were connected in such a complex way that it was a real challenge to put them on paper in a legible way. Not to speak of all the minor characters.

Of course I tried to achieve completeness. I even added names only mentioned in "The History of Middle-earth". But I had to set limits. I decided to add only names connected to the main linage, regardless of whether they are connected directly or by detours. Where no connection is given I decided to exclude. Some will easily recognize the absence of Legolas and his forebears Thranduil and Oropher. Their connection to the mail linage is given nowhere (except that they are Sindar) and I didn't want them to be in limbo. Dwarves and Hobbits are missing likewise.

A little description to the different colours: The names written in blue are Kings or (in the case of the Stewards) Ruling Lords. The green ones are all other rulers. The red names label the different Houses of Elves and Men.

Have fun with it! And be warned: Some people already tried to print this family tree in original size - it is huge!

Tolkein was obsessed. Did he ever teach or did he spend all of his days making this stuff up?? My goodness...talk about a lot of time on his hands!

Indeed it took very long. I started with the main line and worked it over and over again, adding new things every time I read one of Tolkien's works...

You never read the Silmarillion? D:
Before you try the (very difficult) History of Middle-earth you should read the Unfinished Tales first.

I did, and the Unfinished Tales of ME and Numenor, but I need my own copy of the former.

I keep planning to go buy it but I always get distracted... I'm quite ashamed of myself, I who spouts long-winded lectures on the history of Middle Earth to my friends, whether they're interested or not.

XD Although I do have the standard Hobbit and LotR, as well as Unfinished Tales of Numenor and ME, and I've read the Silmarillion (without actually absorbing much of the info), it's kind of sad how little I know compared to the rest of the fandom...

Yes, printing is easier to read - but to print it in a size that the names still can be read will be a veeeery large thing...

PS: It's a shame, but after third reading of Silmarilion I still can't remember which Finwe's and Indis' sons did what

Thank you! Yes, it took not only months, but years to finish. But it was worth it!

Oh yes, not easy. Finarfin was the one who stayed in Valinor, while his children - Galadriel, Finrod etc. - went back to Middle-earth. Fingolfin however went back to Middle-earth and finally fought with Morgoth before the gates of Angband.

VeratheVix [2011-05-27 11:03:44 +0000 UTC]

I am going to go ahead and say that I wasn't even remotely aware that there were so many 'people' (yes, I know that they're fictional, but!) mentioned in the books, and I guess this isn't even half of it (there must be tonnes of others as well!). Can't deny that the books are a unsurmountable example of escapism in its finest! A true world with all the connections imaginable (though I am certain that there would be many more 'servant girl' and 'bar wench' all around the place Censored out, I'm sure.).
Anyway, this is wonderful! I never paid too much attention to all the connections when I read the books; I shall have to go through that fantastic mental journey again now!
(Print this? Perhaps on a A(-3) sheet, yup, at the very least. I mean, poor trees, but this would be worth it for sure, it's extremely (and incomprehensibly) well organized for such a large family tree!)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Berenfox In reply to VeratheVix [2011-05-27 16:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Now, not all the names appearing in my family tree actually do appear in the "Silmarillion". Lots of them are taken from the "History of Middle-earth". And of course there are lots and lots more whom I simply wasn't able to connect with the family tree. And besides Elves and Men there are still the Hobbits and Dwarves left...

The connections are important. Some characters appear in a whole new light when you know of their origin. Have a look at Galadriel's siblings and parents. Or think about Elrond and his attitudes towards Men when you recognise who his brother was.

A3 will be much too small a format to print this family tree. You will not be able to read a single name... printing this large thing really is a problem.

Thank you very much for this comment and your interest!

VeratheVix In reply to Berenfox [2011-05-27 19:37:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I got that, if I recall correctly (being a bit of a Tolkien nut myself) I have read all the books, though it was a while ago! And yeah, that's what I meant by tonnes of others; Dwarves, Hobbits, hobbit/dwarf halflings (I can't fathom how short they would be! And yes, I know they don't appear in the texts, or so I think... ) and don't forget all the names of all the other people in the bars which aren't mentioned but that would exist!

Ha, I am sure of that! this will certainly bring quite a bit of new light into the reading for sure, especially if one doesn't quite have the patience or memory to remember all these things from a single (or double) reading!

As for the A3, notice the (-) sign, I meant to say 'A negative three' paper... I can't imagine how huge that would be... Heh, A0 is already a square metre (if I remember correctly), so three square meters... That sounds awfully small as well, come to think about it; I would not like to live in a three square metre apartment.

Berenfox In reply to VeratheVix [2011-05-31 13:33:38 +0000 UTC]

*laughs* There are no Hobbit/Dwarf Halflings! XD That would be rather odd!

Yepp. But Tolkien's books are of the kind that can be read ten times and you still will gain new perspectives or will find things you never noticed before.

Oh I did not notice that! Yes, it will be huge... I tried to print it several times but at last gave it up.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VeratheVix In reply to Berenfox [2011-06-12 08:32:44 +0000 UTC]

They must be shorter and hairier than those mythical midgets I've heard so much about.

Yes! I think that now that I'm a little older I can appreciate them all the more! Perhaps I'll give a few of the books another read (or read the ones I haven't opened yet ). I think what defines a great novel from a pleasant one is just that!

As for printing... just go to a printing shop somewhere in Asia and tell them to print a huge poster, it'll be relatively pricey (but compared to Europe) and you'll have it by the next day! I don't think having hyper-exact colours is *that* important in this case, heh.

I'm an avid reader; I've read "Dune" four or five times as well, and a few other books multiple times, but none as frequently or as often as the Rings books.
