This is a complete family tree of the Elves and Men in Tolkien's Middle-earth!

Every reader of "The Lord of the Rings" and especially "The Silmarillion" is overwhelmed by a vast number of names and relations. The connections between the inhabitants of Tolkien's world are so complex that one easily loses orientation.

So I decided to draw a family tree some years ago. It started with the main linage from Thingol down to Aragorn. Then it grew. And grew. Alone the protagonists were connected in such a complex way that it was a real challenge to put them on paper in a legible way. Not to speak of all the minor characters.

Of course I tried to achieve completeness. I even added names only mentioned in "The History of Middle-earth". But I had to set limits. I decided to add only names connected to the main linage, regardless of whether they are connected directly or by detours. Where no connection is given I decided to exclude. Some will easily recognize the absence of Legolas and his forebears Thranduil and Oropher. Their connection to the mail linage is given nowhere (except that they are Sindar) and I didn't want them to be in limbo. Dwarves and Hobbits are missing likewise.

A little description to the different colours: The names written in blue are Kings or (in the case of the Stewards) Ruling Lords. The green ones are all other rulers. The red names label the different Houses of Elves and Men.

Have fun with it! And be warned: Some people already tried to print this family tree in original size - it is huge!

*smirks* It definitely IS confusing, but you have to blame Tolkien for that! XD

Wow, you're my new personal hero. I've been wanting something like this for a long time because I've had a hard time trying to keep up with the lineages and with who is related to whom. This is EPIC work and it's great of you to share it with those of us who get totally lost when trying to do the same.

I was surprised to see a few words in German in the genealogy lol

Have a look at this link: [link] This is an older version of my family tree, but with links on (nearly) every name. When you click on a name you will be directed to the character's entry on the Tolkien Gateway. Some links are broke and the version is not up to date, but I will fix it soon.

Oh damn! Where did you see any german word? Please tell me so I can fix it!
I have a German version and an English version - but sometimes when I update them I confound things...

Okay now you are a double hero! I've bookmarked the page. It will be very useful when I get disoriented in the sea of characters Tolkien created Thanks a lot!

Right where the line of the Chieftains of the Dunedain starts, you left the title in German. In the same area, beside Aranarth, instead of 'other sons' you left that in German. I don't know if there are any more as this thing is huge and I haven't checked it thoroughly, but those are the more notorious.

You're very welcome!

Thank you so much, I'll fix that instantly! It was a spot where I changed something, copied the changes from the german version to the english version and forgot to translate...

It really take you too long, congrats for your work!... i've seen the lineage trees of tolkien's work on his encyclopedia, but in parts, i think maybe there you can find where legolas lineage belongs, also hobits and dwarves....
Tolkien's work can be really expressive and instrospective at the same time.

Berenfox In reply to blackokatt [2010-11-30 15:00:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know those encyclopedias. But there is no hint in Tolkien's works where Legolas and his forebears belong. They are Sindar, that's clear, but to whom of the Sindarin fathers they are connected nowhere is told

Berenfox In reply to FalconofFire [2010-11-30 14:51:33 +0000 UTC]

*smiles* You'll never guess which program I used for that...

I did it in Microsoft Excel. Sounds weird, but its very easy and very effective. Here you can see a WIP of the german version: [link]

The names are written in two connected fields, the lines are nothing but framelines. After I finished the work in Excel I set the background colour to white, made screenshots and put them together in Photoshop.

FalconofFire In reply to Berenfox [2010-11-30 19:32:37 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Berenfox In reply to FalconofFire [2010-11-30 19:48:04 +0000 UTC]

Years.

I had to do lots of research, I had to read all of the published works by Tolkien. Since a lot of his writings ar ein a difficult state I had to make difficult decisions. This part was hard work.

Writing it down and editing it after new insights was easy.

Probably not i've heard he's a snob.

I have no idea though. That might have been from people who don't like tolkien.

*coughjockscough* pfft.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Berenfox In reply to FalconofFire [2010-12-01 09:10:30 +0000 UTC]

I don't know... I just know that he would not like the idea of forcing 60 years of multi-variant development into a single solution. And he is right with that. I often had to make difficult decisions, and in some cases there simply is no single solution. Let alone the countless names I added which simply vanished in later versions of Tolkiens stories.
Exactly this was the big problem Chris Tolkien had to face when he edited the "Silmarillion". He never was happy with the published work, that is why he finally brought out the twelve volumes of the "History of Middle-earth".
