This is a complete family tree of the Elves and Men in Tolkien's Middle-earth!
Every reader of "The Lord of the Rings" and especially "The Silmarillion" is overwhelmed by a vast number of names and relations. The connections between the inhabitants of Tolkien's world are so complex that one easily loses orientation.
So I decided to draw a family tree some years ago. It started with the main linage from Thingol down to Aragorn. Then it grew. And grew. Alone the protagonists were connected in such a complex way that it was a real challenge to put them on paper in a legible way. Not to speak of all the minor characters.
Of course I tried to achieve completeness. I even added names only mentioned in "The History of Middle-earth". But I had to set limits. I decided to add only names connected to the main linage, regardless of whether they are connected directly or by detours. Where no connection is given I decided to exclude. Some will easily recognize the absence of Legolas and his forebears Thranduil and Oropher. Their connection to the mail linage is given nowhere (except that they are Sindar) and I didn't want them to be in limbo. Dwarves and Hobbits are missing likewise.
A little description to the different colours: The names written in blue are Kings or (in the case of the Stewards) Ruling Lords. The green ones are all other rulers. The red names label the different Houses of Elves and Men.
Have fun with it! And be warned: Some people already tried to print this family tree in original size - it is huge!

My god, this is incredible!
This.. this must have been quite the time-vampire! But, a satisfying one.
I much prefer the Silmarillion to Lord of the Rings - far more interesting with an amazing cast of characters.
For what must be the 50th time you've heard this: Good job!

Thank you very much!
Time-vampire... maybe. Of course I needed to do lots of research for it, but on the other hand I would have read all the books anyway. Of course some parts were really hard work to get a result, but most time it was more like reading the books, discovering something new and transferring it into my genealogy. No question that work was just fun!
The Silmarillion and the Lord of the Rings are too different for me to compare them directly. I love both of them in their way, but the Lord of the Rings will always be my favourite book ever.
Thank you very much again!

Ok, this is pure insanity O_O ...wonder if I could study this until I know it by heart before January so I can impress my teachers next year when I take a Tolkien course at university?

Berenfox In reply to ragnaice [2010-12-08 13:00:52 +0000 UTC]
*laughs* Not even I do know the whole thing by heart! XD But it is not very difficult to learn the main branches with the most important names.
A Tolkien course at university is great! What will be the main theme? I think there will be some better things to impress your teachers there...

haha wow
im probably retarded, but for me this one was slightly more difficult to understand than some others ive seen xD still i see the hellofalotofwork youve put into it and cant show anything but admiration for you <3
one plus for you though, you follow the "correct" way of genealogical trees, the oldest sibling comes first the trees that i feel are easier to follow give up at that point and just put the names in a way thats comfortable xD so yay, go you!

Berenfox In reply to oOMliOo [2010-12-07 21:32:54 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes this one definitely IS more difficult than other ones. I was tempted to do it like the others and put the names in a comfortable way - but at last I decided to do it in the correct way. There were some other equal choices I made that make this tree more difficult than others. Finally, this tree is nothing for beginners - too many names not mentioned in the main works.
I'm very happy you like my work, thanks a lot for this comment!

I'm so sorry, I completely missed that in the description. Thanks for that.
Yes, I set up a pedigree chart years ago of the three Elven branches. So I am a Tolkien geek like you.

I don't really upload Tolkien stuff any more, but I could dig it up for you if you would like to see it. It's just the three Elven branches and all the names I could find set up in a chart.

Ok. I found it, and this is it. [link] I don't have a scanner so I had to photograph it. It's in a large book ('Parma Eldarion') where I used to write up poems and various things in Quenya and Sindarin written in Tengwar. A true geek.
As you can see I left out the Vanyar because there is really not much reckoning of them, staying back in the undying lands and all.

Berenfox In reply to IreneLangholm [2010-12-08 13:07:53 +0000 UTC]
Wow, this is very beautifully done! There are some minor errors (like Noldo instead of Noldor and not labelling the Sindar) but you did a great job!
You "speak" Quenya and Sindarin? I learned that once too, though it's long since I used them.
It's a pity that Tolkien did not write more about the Vanyar...

IreneLangholm In reply to Berenfox [2010-12-08 13:52:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
Yeah, I know. This was done so many years ago. Then again, the Teleri were the ancestors of the Sindar, Laiquendi, and Nandor.
I don't speak Elvish, but I found poems and texts in Elvish which I again 'translated' to the Tengwar writing system which I taught myself to use way back when. I learned that there are three different way to use the system; The Quenya mode, Sindarin Standard mode and Sindarin Beleriand mode.
Yes, you're right, it would have been very interesting to know the life of the ones that remained in the Undying Lands.

Berenfox In reply to IreneLangholm [2010-12-08 14:43:40 +0000 UTC]
Of course you're right.
Oh yes it's a lot of fun to transcribe such texts! <3 But there are far more than only three modes. There are special modes for Númenor or Gondor and some other minor modes. If you're interested in that have a look here www.elvish.org/gwaith/pdf/history_of_writing.pdf
