Description
A remake of the "Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters" movie poster featuring the Hawke twins (Bethany and Carver) as the "MageKillers".After I finished my submission for 's " Recreate a picture competition" I was inspired and motivated to go back to this older idea of mine, i.e. recreating the movie poster of "Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters" with Carver and Bethany. And since the Dragon Age universe does not really have "witch hunters", I thought it would work better if they are actually "mage killers" devoted to hunting down blood mages, akin to Mario and Tessa in the "Dragon Age: Magekiller" comic.
Also, I took the chance to go back to doing more rendering in Blender!
BTW, say what you want, but I enjoyed watching "Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters"... Ok, it's no masterpiece, but it's a fun movie all in all!

This would make quite the effective book cover or movie poster indeed and I really like that glow effect on Bethany's staff (as well as the material for it)! Nice work

Thank you, that's great to hear from someone who is as skilled as you with rendering in Cycles! This is one of the pictures in my gallery I'm most happy with: I can see some faults here and there, due to some small improvements in my ability with Cycles, but in the end I still think that both the rendering and the post-processing (to add some effects like the glow you mentioned) have provided a satisfying result here.
BTW, noticed your name change: I got used to the old one, but sometimes it's refreshing to switch to a new name!

You flatter me :'D
Oh yes Now that I think about it, I like how you modded the meshes, too!
And yep, it's not only refreshing but it proved to be essential because of identity matters: some people got confused as I used to have different nicknames (elyhumanoid, Ellen Pendragon) on different websites and I'm still waiting for FB to change the name of my page (I guess I'll have to wait months for that). I hope I didn't make things worst LOL

Well, extracting is relatively easy, you can find all the info you need in an excellent tutorial in Padme4000's gallery. Converting the extracted models for use in XNA requires a bit more work and practice as well as some knowledge of Blender. Padme4000's tutorial covers all the process anyway, so you should be able to find everything you need there.

Nice one. Hansel got too much cookie as a child and what got Carver instead?
The used staff, locks interesting.
And now I've to look where I put the Hansel & Gretel blu-ray.

Thank you, I'm happy with how this turned out!
That's a good question! What did Carver get plenty of as a kid?
Lyrium maybe? I really need to think about something suitable instead of cookies/sweets! As for Bethany's staff, that's one of my favorite staff designs in Dragon Age. In DA2 it is called "Malcolm's Honor" and used to belong to Hawke's father: I like to think that he left that for Bethany to inherit once she grew up.
Careful not to lose your own Hansel & Gretel blu-ray! The one good thing about this movie being a bit underrated is that I could get the blu-ray at the same price of the dvd disc.

You're welcome.
Maybe he fall as a child into a pot full of Lyrium and has today some kind of allergy against it.
Didn't remember that it was in the game. Okay to be honest since I was disappointed from DA2 I never gave it a second chance/playthrough.
Sounds like a nice idea.
Taking care of your things is always a good idea. I like the movie.
Nowadays I rarely buy dvds. The price difference is mostly nothing to speak of.

Berserker79 In reply to Grummel83 [2017-03-22 20:15:23 +0000 UTC]
You know, that's a nice idea for this Dragon Age/Hansel & Gretel crossover: as a kid Carver was exposed to lyrium and developed an allergy to it. Think I'm going to make it the canon for this concept.
Regarding the staff, to be honest it's part of a DLC, so it's entirely possible you did not find it unless you had the relevant DLC. Since I understand you did not like much the game, understandably you likely did not invest further money into buying the DLCs. Personally, I liked DA2 in spite of its flaws: it was mostly the characters, their interaction with Hawke and their dialogue which contributed to my enjoyment of the game. Guess this is one more of those issues where it's up to personal taste.
And yes, the price of dvds is pretty close to that of the blu-ray discs today. Until recently, I've been sticking to dvds for the simple reason I did not a BD player. However, my old dvd player stopped working a few months ago, so I'm shifting to buying blu-ray discs now given that, as you say, the price different is real small.

Glad I could help.
That could be it. I've only the DLC with Sebastian that came a long with the edition I bought.
Whatever, If you like the games, than it's good. Maybe the one or other DLC enriched the game, but this ship has sailed!
There are a lot of genres where I don't care if the blu ray looks better or not, but due to the price it makes no sense to think about.
So it's understandable that you still saw no reason to buy a player.
At least blu rays have a small advantage. They need less space in the shelf.

Absolutely. It was interesting (as far as I remember) you couldn't be a Mage and have Bethany live as well. Only one Mage in the family or something. I personally chose carver and made him a warden in game. But my fanfic he is a Templar. You would assume the name of either twin would have been more thrown around in inquisition too. Cullen Alistair stroud or loghain would have know them at least.

Berserker79 In reply to SangoSweetz [2017-03-11 23:13:04 +0000 UTC]
You remember correctly, if you play a mage Hawke only Carver makes it to Kirkwall in one piece. While I like both twins, I've saved Bethany in 99% of my games and usually made her go to the Circle, since she seems happier there than with the Wardens (still, Bethany and Carver as Wardens look cool! ). Sadly, the companions from DA2 were almost forgotten in Inquisition. With the exception of some War Table missions who mention them and a bit of dialogue with Varric and Hawke, there is not much mention of either twin as well as the rest of the DA2 gang.

Two things caught my eye immediately - the amazing glow effect you added to Bethany's staff and the lack of your usual border.
While I miss the latter because it was so unmistakably you, I appreciate how professional the implementation of the logo looks, and how cleverly you placed the effect I mentioned at the beginning.
The emprise du Lion background and the snow reminds me of the promo images/introduction pieces for the companions that BioWare released three years ago.
While I'm not sure how you modded them to wear the inquisitors' clothes (are such models even publicly available? I must have missed them), I appreciate that you chose their original faces for it, they're best recognizable that way! Bethany looks unusually badass, especially because she's seen wearing black while Carver looks more self-confident than usual, too.
He reminds me a whole lot of Marius here, maybe because you also mentioned in the author's comment already that you were toying with the mage killer trope.
I probably would have placed the Mage Killer title in the top middle of the picture and uased the Dragon Age II font (if it exists) instead of using the DA Logo.
Not that the logo is a bad choice, but I think the title you chose just in that font would have been even better.
With the negative space above Carver and the title in the right bottom corner I feel like there could be an improvement to the composition. Have you tried other colors for it, too? I don't think I would've gone for a vibrant red myself, because it's highly saturated and clashes with the green of Carver's scarf.
You basically went with the golden/blue color composition and red seems like an intruder here.
Apart from all the technical details I mentioned, I'm glad to see you trying to work with Blender again, it surely is becoming more and more fun the more you use it and I can't wait until you start experimenting with things like water, fire, light and reflections.

Thank you so much for devoting some of your time to provide your feedback! I know I’ve asked for comments, but I hope that did not somehow feel you obligated to comment. If so my apologies. In any event, I really appreciate your comment here, which is in essence an actual critique.
You raised two very good points. First, I’d like to explain why there is no border. Actually, I had one originally, but when I looked at the final result I felt something similar to what you experienced with your Calsephine work, i.e. that a simpler scene would work better with the frame. Also, since this is supposed to be a remake of a movie poster, I realized that movie posters don’t come with a frame usually.
The second point is the placement of the Mage Killer title. I did not think about placing the title where you suggest, but that could work nicely now that you mention it. To be honest leaving all that space above Carver bothered me a little: I was afraid of making the scene too crowded if all areas of the background were covered by elements placed in the “foreground” and then I ended crowding that right bottom corner. I think that, once more, it was my desire to stick to the looks of the movie poster I used as a reference which stuck in my head the idea of placing the Mage Killer title there. Well, since I still have all the work files I could give a try at making an alternative version with a new title placement.
As for the color of the Mage Killer title, that’s also a reflection of the reference movie poster. I thought that, because the picture mostly uses a blue color palette, using a highly contrasting color such as red for the title was a good idea to give emphasis to the title. Admittedly, using white for the title could have worked too… Anyway, about Carver’s scarf: would you suggest switching to a different color? I used green to distinguish his scarf from that of his sister, but maybe that wasn’t the best choice.
And I’m glad you noticed details such as the glow effect on Bethany’s staff (as always you have a very keen eye! ) and that the this reminds you one Bioware’s promo pieces for DAI. I was trying to merge the looks of the reference movie poster with the look and feel of the Dragon Age universe, and your comment suggests I’ve gone in the right direction.
Finally, with regard to the models, I don’t think models of those inquisitors’ clothes are publicly available. I extracted them from scratch at my end for this project, because I needed them with their original non-renamed bones to ensure a smooth meshmodding, but as far as I know no one have released these models. As you noticed, I used for both characters their original DA2 face and then combined the heads with the DAI body models (Carver uses solely the inquisitor’s clothes, while for Bethany I also used a part of Isabela’s DAI body/clothes.
I’ll do some more experimenting in Blender, provided I have enough time. I had hopes to be able to including a fireball in Bethany’s left hand entirely generated in Blender, but getting the effect correctly began to take too much time and I decided to leave that out in the end.

You're welcome, my friend. I'm sorry if it wasn't as enthusiastic as usual, but I'm struggling with the aftermath of a homophobic attack from a "friend" irl and general (for months untreated) depression.
I'm glad you could work with the points I brought up/found them helpful. As for the color of Carver's scarf: It was easier to just modify the image instead of trying to explain.
I also made a suggestion for a composition tweak (and the reason behind it in form of a grid that shows the point(s) of interest/attention) if you're interested in that:
About the border: I'm glad you didn't discard the idea entirely and only left it out because of the nature of the image. I can imagine that it probably hampered the concept of the movie cover.
As for the color of the title: I see how red is tempting as it's associated with blood, but your alternative choice, white, is associated with coldness and that goes well with the killer theme, too.
Regarding the fire you wanted to insert, it's a great goal to work towards to. As long as you haven't figured it out, you can always try a combination of brushing and painting.
Maybe those resources/tutorials help in the process:
And I'm impressed that you managed to extract the parts of the inquisitor's robe!
I'm a bit jelly because my male elf was a mage with a gorgeous robe and I have literally every possible outfit for him except that.
I really like the inquisitor's armors. It's also hugely impressive that you modded Bethany so heavily that you even merged another outfit into it.
I don't wanna know how long that took!

Thank you, this is extremely helpful! Now I'm feeling quite guilty because it looks like you spent a good deal of your spare time to help me providing a visual reference to improve this picture, sorry! Once I complete my next project I'll take some time to do some tests at my own end and maybe release a new version of this picture. In particular, I like your suggested composition tweak: that both solves the "problem" of the negative space above Carver and brings the characters' faces close to those points of the grid where viewers are more likely to focus. Incidentally, when I set up the scene in XPS I had a grid like that in the background to help camera placement. Unfortunately, once I imported the scene in blender the carefully place XPS camera setup was lost and thereafter I forgot about the grid when setting up a new camera in blender...
A blue scarf for Carver seems to work, but I'm not entirely sure about Bethany's clothes being amaranth: it's not as bright as the shade of red I used for the title, but I'm still wondering whether that is also a color which does not entirely fit the color scheme of the picture..: confused: Also, thanks for the links to the fire tutorials/resources: they can come in handy until I can learn how to add fire directly in blender.
As for the inquisitors robes, there is a problem with the cloth part of several variants which the DAI Tools are unable to extract. I was lucky that the cloth mesh for Carver's outfit and the one I used for my Inquisitor are the only cloth parts which can be extracted. Anyway, if you have a reference picture or screenshot of your elven mage inquisitor that you can share, I can take a look and see whether his outfit is extractable.

I'm kind of wondering whether I should have submitted this one for the contest: from a certain point of view I'm happier about this one than the Doom cover art picture, but the Doom piece was what I had in mind for the contest after all...
Oh, about Bethany's outfit here: in essence it's one of the mage inquisitor outfits with thee addition of part of Isabela's outfit plus the scarf from Bethany's DA2 model.
