Description

Ashley Williams is ready for a romantic New Year's Eve celebration with Commander Shepard. The two of them are throwing a private party in the Normandy's Captain Cabin which seemingly favors drinking over eating, but they have no intention to give up on lighting some fireworks of their own...

And what are your plans for the upcoming New Year's Eve?

BTW, finally faced the time-consuming task of converting to Cycles materials the Blender Internal materials of Grummel8's excellent v1.1 release of his Captain's Cabin port. Now I can re-use this scenery for future renders without worrying about the need to set up the materials all over again!

CREDITS:

Posed in XPS 11.8, rendered in Blender Cycles 2.79 (about 900 samples), editing and post-processing in Paint.NET.

Models used:
Ashley Williams red underwear model based on mods extracted/modded by Grummel83

Normandy SR-2 Captain's Cabin scenery model for Blender extracted by Grummel83

Serrice Ice bottle model extracted by nach77

Liana - Silver Bracelets model ported to XPS by MoogleOutFitters

No worries! And I'm happy you thinks so!

Nice one. I would have bet on blue, but red looks good too.

And who knows, there's a big window above the bed, maybe they still get their firework.

Out of curiosity, how long did it took to convert the scene for cycles?

Thanks! As much as I like Ashley wearing blue, red seemed the best option in view of that old tradition to wear something red on New Year's Eve for good luck! And I guess that the window above the bed will probably be perfect to watch some fireworks.

Converting the scene to Cycles took around 2-3 hours, but probably can be done faster (I took my time without hurrying at all to do this). Biggest help came from a Blender add-on called "Materials Utils Specials" (you can enable this under the "Material" category in the add-ons menu of user preferences) that automatically converts BI materials to cycles. The converted materials are not ready-to-use for rendering, but the converter does the hard job of importing all textures of the BI material into corresponding cycles materials with some basic nodes, so all I had to do was copy & paste of some node setups I had already prepared when I did the render with the Starboard Observation Deck scenery and use those to replace the basic nodes created by the converted. Having to simply connect the imported textures to the shaders was much faster than having to manually select each texture.

You're welcome. I've to admit that I didn't knew that tradition about the red color.

Anyway, a little change of color can't be bad.

I would have thought it would have taken longer. I knew the Material menu.

Even for the internal render it can be useful. It always useful to determine the base texture of an object.

Recycling of materials is really useful. I did the same with the different levels of the Normandy.

Lol, I kinda thought it was a more widespread tradition, but then I read it's actually popular only in certain countries. Let's assume that Ashley read about it somewhere and decided to go along with it for some fun!

I was really afraid that converting all materials would take much more than that, but in the end it turned out that copying and pasting the node setups and then connecting the textures was relatively quick (but really boring! ). At least now it's done and I can readily use the cabin scenery for future renders using Cycles. Thanks again for making this scenery model available!

Who knows how and where tradition will develop over the next two hundred years.

Lucky you!

I'm still at war with Cycles. Fortunately I'm not forced to use it.

You're welcome.

Hot dammmmmnnnnnn!!! Excellent work on the rendering my brother. The fore and background defocus is perfect and those shadows look super realistic

Thanks man! Glad you like this and I really appreciate you stopped by to drop a comment: so far there was none and it felt kind of strange... But maybe I shouldn't complain: better no comment than spam comment, right? The defocus effect is another Blender "trick" that I learned from Verahnika's tutorials and it's great to give some more depth to renders. Also, I think it makes the while thing look a bit more professional... Kind of at least...

Oh don't stress about not getting many comments man. This time of year is the worst for it since most people are off busy travelling or with family. Definitely not a reflection on ow great this came out

Yeah, not stressing at all about the lack of comments, that's nothing new after all... It just seemed odd that with a decent number of views over just a couple of days nobody had left a comment, but you're totally right that this time of the year sees many people busy.
