This was our (not very good) view of the total solar eclipse of November 2012, through clouds, taken from a point near Cairns, Australia. We were almost completely clouded out but we did get one or two dramatic peeks of the eclipsed sun. Here we can already see a red prominence at the 3 o'clock position and we can see the brightness of the sun's corona outlining the moon's top right side. A "Bailey's bead" of brilliant sunlight is still shining through a valley at about 4 o'clock on the moon's profile, and a thin band of not yet eclipsed sunlight is visible below and to the left of that.Related content

Thanks so much, Lynda! I still would have greatly preferred clear skies, but the clouds do lend a certain drama to the picture.
