Free will has been restored either by accidents (oft by handing the robian a power ring) or energy explosions (or the events in #50ff), or by the Sword of Acorns IF wielded & commanded by Sally. Free will can be preserved by a special device worn by the subject as the process begins, or a power ring being held while free will is being electronically removed (#75).
Power Rings derive their power from the green Chaos Emeralds, but can be drained unlike them.

A painful process - regardless of the exact model of the machine. Many subjects scream out as the change is in progress.
Subjects roboticized by the earliest models could only be changed back by the same machine. Later machines could reroboticize any subject.
Also the original intent was to give the person superhuman powers and act as an inherent life support system if (s)he was moribund at the time of transformation. Robotnik's modification robs the subject of any free will and makes such an unquestioning slave, esp. if burnthrough is used to eradicate subconscious thinking. (This prevented robo-Sally from turning her comrades into robians in #29. Robotnik added burnthrough by #49-50 and STILL Mecha-Sonic could not bring himself to kill Tails !).
Roboticization appears to have largely dropped out of the series, with Sonic's father being the only robian left (a mass de-roboticizing was done by aliens, but Sonic's father would die the moment he got de-roboticized, being one with his own life-support system !). Due to the radical reboot of Mobius' past, I do not know just what is true anymore.

Wow. Shame about all the immature comments up at the top. I just wanted to say there's something fascinating about this picture, it's so...creepy. The process is so real and painful, and the upward movement of the machine in action, even if in just this still frame, is startlingly eerie.

I imagine that this is likely what really happens during roboticization. Extremely painful and mind breaking. I would rather see Amy Rose suffering this fate. What an annoying lil bitch she is.

This happens in Sonic #29 . Sally, now Robo-Sally, works for Robotnik and, having captured Sonic & Co., is given the honor of robotizing them. However, she is unable to push the start button, since deep down there is a spark of her real self left !

This is one of those things I keep coming back to. It's a very emotional and wrenching piece, and I literally cannot imagine the amount of agony it would take... Her eye looks as though it's about to burst from her socket, her blood pressure must be nearly enough to precipitate an aneurysm..

I've always liked this picture. I may be odd for saying that I was drawn towards it, but it reminds me of a dream I had some...15 years ago? damn, it's been THAT long since SatAM first aired already. But I remember vividly a dream that was just like this. The horrific nature of this picture is overshadowed only by the thought of just how sadistic Robotnik would have to be to not only sit back and watch, but to laugh and enjoy it.
