Description The first piece that I've done since the nerve and muscle damage has healed enough for me to get pencil to paper and not come out with complete shit. Originally done as a quick sketch, I worked it into finished pencils after a friend asked me to make it into a tattoo design.

Yep yep, was in Japan from the time I was 3 until I came back to the States at 17. Every so often I get homesick.

Oh, MAN!!! That's so cool! Tell me you speak fluent Japanese and my head will explode with jealousy!!! XD

What part of Japan did you live in?

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-09-24 15:40:44 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe. I used to speak fluent Japanese, but my skills have dwindled over the last 15 years, unfortunately. *sigh* I need to get more face time with Japanese speakers to bone up! I grew up in Iwakuni, which is on southern Honshu, about 45 minutes SW of Hiroshima by train.

Ah, it's true--if you don't use it, you lose it. I used to speak some Spanish (not a lot), but over time I forgot most of it. But speaking a little Japanese is still amazingly awesome! I'd love to visit Japan one of these days.

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-09-26 09:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm the same way with my Spanish that I am with my Japanese. Rusty to the point where it's probably painful. Luckily, I still don't have an accent when I speak Japanese, no matter how clunky my phrasing is.

I'll never talk anyone out of visiting my old neck of the woods. It's beautiful, and the history is incredible. I love Japanese art history. I miss lecturing on it quite a bit. The only caveat...Holy crap is it expensive!

You speak Spanish, too?! Man, you're like a Renaissance man! But yeah, I've always been mystified by Japan--the way the ancient and modern come together so harmoniously; it's nothing else in the world! You used to lecture on Japanese art?! Maybe it would be faster to just tell me the things you HAVEN'T done! Did you do that at school? That's soooo cool!

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-09-28 22:35:34 +0000 UTC]

Just a touch. I took 3 years of it in school, but don't use it much anymore. I just get a kick out of learning new stuff.

Totally agree about the dichotomy of culture, it's truly fascinating. You can go 10 minutes outside of Tokyo and you're in COUNTRY! It's definitely one of the few modern first-world cultures left that really tries to incorporate tradition into their society and succeeds. My wife keeps saying that we need to go so I can show her around LOL.

Yeah, I used to lecture on Japanese art history at my old university. I primarily lectured on anime and its history, and how the earlier stuff was almost directly derived from traditional printmaking and painting, while taking influence from the cartoons and comics brought over by the GI's during WW2. I had awesome art history prof who would call me back every quarter to lecture to her freshman class. She called me in a few times after I graduated, but she eventually moved back to Hawaii. Totally miss it!

That's awesome! Yeah, I would LOVE to visit Japan, maybe even live there for a few years. Life dream! I've loved Japanese culture ever since I was a kid. There's something so intense yet calm about it. It just seems to radiate dignity and power, but with a solemn mastering of itself, if that makes sense. Man, I'm making myself want to go even more!!!

That's so cool! I would have loved to hear a lecture or two. I had heard that, that a lot of anime was inspired by western cartoons--that Astro Boy was inspired by Mickey Mouse, right? I also heard how Disney totally ripped off a Japanese cartoon with the Lion King--that the main character was even named "Kimba" in the original. Nice, Disney... '_'

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-10-06 07:39:40 +0000 UTC]

LOL I totally used the Jungle Emperor Leo (Kimba the White Lion) example in my lecture. Tezuka was influenced by Disney in general, and you can definitely see it in his character designs. Just look at the lines of Astro Boy's face, and compare them to our favorite mouse, and the family resemblance is pretty undeniable. Ironic then, that Disney would then blatently rip off one of his later creations. Gotta love how that works, eh?

If you get the chance, you should definitely go and check out Japan. Just make sure that you have a nice bankroll before you go. EXPENSIVE!!

MurderousAutomaton In reply to BigRobot [2009-10-08 05:45:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's what it's called! I never knew the name of that anime, just that Disney ripped it off! I'll have to look it up. Disney never did create their own stories--they always based them off of old tales, but I guess this time they decided to take all the credit! Though I suppose even the orginal story is similar to Hamlet, in a way.

Yeah, I heard Japan is CRAZY expensive--especially Tokyo. 12 bucks for a cup of coffee. Yikes! I doubt I'd have the money or means until I'm older and more established, anyway. But someday!

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-10-09 16:49:23 +0000 UTC]

Yep. I railed about it for a while and shyed away from Disney for quite a while because of it. I just don't like the fact that they didn't give any credit where it was due. If there's anyone I can't stand it's a plagiarist. If they said it was homage to Tezuka, I would have been perfectly fine with it. Ah well.

Yeah, man...prices in Japan are ridiculous. When I left in 94, my favorite example was the 9 dollar can of tuna, but if coffee is hitting 12 bucks, the shit has apparently hit the proverbial fan. LOL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to BigRobot [2009-10-13 06:43:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Disney's never been good about NOT being assholes! They probably figured that they could get away with it, since most Americans wouldn't know about the anime. Now they're doing that Frog Princess movie--I wonder who they ripped that off from!

Holy crap! Nine dollars for tuna?! And canned tuna sucks! But at the rate American's going, Starbucks will probably hit 12 bucks for a cup of coffee by the end of the decade...

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-10-20 18:56:43 +0000 UTC]

Tell me about it. They protect their OP's with the fist of an angry god, yet love to "borrow" from others. Ah well. I've been ranting about them for years now LOL.

Yeah, man...stuff is hella expensive over there. Now their canned tuna is WAAAAAAAY better than any of the stuff over here, but still! Of course, you're right about Starbucks (and I'm in the heart of Starbucks territory, so I see it getting pricier every day). I used to practically mainline that crap when I was in college. Anyone else miss the days when you could get a cup o joe for 50 cents??

MurderousAutomaton In reply to BigRobot [2009-10-21 00:38:00 +0000 UTC]

Ha, ha! Totally! They put their movies in that dumbass "vault" of theirs, toying around with their own fans--what the hell is that? Disney sucks. Bring Walt back to life! Even if he's a horrible zombie, he can't do much worse than Eisner!

Ha! 50 cents for coffee! I'd drink that as I make my 10 cent phone call! But any time anything becomes a status symbol the prices go crazy! Still, I'd rather pay too much for coffee because it's in Tokyo than pay too much for it because I'm trying to be trendy in America!

No kidding. I never got why they had the need to keep pulling and reissuing the same damn title with more extras a couple years later. You really have to wonder if there are those die hard Disney fans that really have all 20 versions of Cinderella. I don't know if we really want zombie Walt, but don't they have his head frozen somewhere? Bring him back all Futurama style. that would kick ass. LOL.

Quarter for a phone call, thank you very much. I'm not THAT old LOL.

MurderousAutomaton In reply to BigRobot [2009-10-31 18:14:01 +0000 UTC]

Ha, ha! Totally! Then we can feed Walt like a fish! I hope Disney pulls their collective heads out of their ass sooner or later, at least for Nightmare Before Christmas' sake! It's my favorite movie ever, and it tears me up that Disney has control over it! They wanted little to do with it when it first came out (hence putting it under their "Touchstone" title), but after it made a ton of money they started pimping it out at the Disney store. Whores!

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-11-13 19:27:51 +0000 UTC]

For sure. Disney is all about creative control. I'm amazed that Pixar and Marvel are given free reign, to be honest. Hell, I noticed that Disney doesn't have ANY problem putting their name on NBX stuff these days. Especially that $100+ NBX blu-ray that came out last year...

MurderousAutomaton In reply to BigRobot [2009-11-21 19:41:04 +0000 UTC]

Totally! Disney is definitely a case of capitalism run amok. Taking something as wonderful as exploration and imagination, then exploiting it (and their own customers) to make tons of money. I hope someday they'll return to their roots!

BigRobot In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2009-12-07 02:56:33 +0000 UTC]

I hope so too. I have very fond memories of growing up on the Disney classics, and sometimes wonder where it all went horribly wrong. I keep hearing about how the new guy heading up Disney after Eisner is a solid dude who wants to bring the magic back, so cross your fingers but don't hold your breath. LOL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to BigRobot [2009-12-13 04:42:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've heard that, too. Eisner was definitely a turd sandwich, but hopefully they can put art ahead of profits again (what Walt would have wanted) and get Disney back to being a respectable company! I loved Disney's cartoons when I was a kid (more the shorts, not the movies), because they were made for the right reason: art and exploration!
