Description
Download for details. This is my second attempt to make something like a firefox os.
I now use Xpud [link] as my base distro instead of ubuntu and now i have a real "instant on" os (Ok it still needs 5 sec. but compared to more than 1.5 min with windows it feels pretty instant and with only 60MB it light too
After my first attempt to use addons as replacement for desktop apps i now found a much better way.
Just use desktop apps inside Firefox.
Yeah thats right, I now use apps like pcmanfm, geany or deadbeef INSIDE a firefox tab XD
The first shot is not the desktop but the menu.
On the left are the webapps (flurry [link] ) on the button are the desktop apps (Faenza icons) and on the right are the settings apps.
The next shots are showing two desktop apps and a webapp running. You can see that there is no navigation bar for desktop apps to save screen space (you can also hide the nav bar for webapps too)
It now feels like im using winxp with a better task bar and more screen space with almost all the linux goodies
I now try to get real tray icons like wifi indicator or a sound manager inside of firefox
wish me luck

This is awesome. Is it possible to have tabs in windowed mode though? I've thought about how a FF OS should work as well, and that's one feature that I feel is very important, but awkward to deal with.
This isn't meant to be a full-featured OS though, is it?
I'd like to see a full featured OS based on Firefox that can easily replace Windows for all purposes.

Do you mean tab tearing? you can basicly do everything you can do with the normal firefox. This is just a minimal linux installation with firefox maximized XD

Lol, since Firefox is based on some pseudo-toolkit that runs with a GTK frontend, I imagine making a notifications plugin to handle Linux services would be a pretty extensive project. XD Maybe using ChromeOS' prebuilt stuff would work out better? Who knows. Firefox 4 is pretty kickin', though.
Oh, by the way, you're freaking insane. How did you do this, exactly?

Hey thank you
I just run FF4 in a Xpud session and use mozzplugger plugin to place the apps into firefox

Mozplugger? Wow, never heard of that. Lol, I just realized how easy it would be to compete with Chrome OS. *facepalm* I personally prefer JoliCloud, if you've ever heard of it. It's great as a media center/netbook distro.
I love how fast xPud starts up. I want to get the same effect with some other distro. I think I might just install xPud on some partition now. So far as I know xPud doesn't actually run anything more than a gecko layer and X, so it should be pretty light.
Lol, here I go, back to the days of distro-hopping.

Xpud is just a minimal openbox session with just running notifyosd and firefox.
the interface is just a offline website running as a webapp.
I just replaced the webapp with the full firefox ui and added conky for date/time wifi/battery
I also searched for other distros with less startup time but xpud was the fastest for me. I use it to quickly surf the internet, watch tv/video or do stuff without booting my full os
PS: I know JoliCloud, I use it inside my FFos XD

Omg. that's awesome! If i'd ever get a netbook, this would be my OS for sure. My current lappy has 17", so, pretty useless
Great work!

Thank you glad you like it.
I use it as an instant on os when i just want to check emails or read some feeds, so it isnt that useless on a bigger screen
