Definitely the best monster design to grace our screens in recent years, and possibly ever, Moder from 'the Ritual' is the perfect departure from cinematic convention, nothing like it ever having been seen in a production before. not only is it non-humanoid (which is always a bonus), but its mismatched physiology is reminiscent of creatures from traditional folklore, and seemingly being made of dismembered bodies brings to mind the best of eldritch abominations. This design is also executed perfectly in the movie, blending seamlessly into the environment to never reveal too much and keep you guessing, as the best suspenseful scary movies ought to do. It is also rare that you'll find me praising a movie adaptation over its original book, but the choice of the much more pagan elk or moose over the classically Judeo-Christian/demonic goat as a base influence is better fitting to the tone, premise, and setting of the story. If you haven't seen it yet, go and do so now, and hopefully its success will mean that we can expect more such wonderfully designed creatures from all our movies, not just horror.
