Description
The finished piece, which ended up being a necklace. And a honkin' one at that. It's got a black onyx cab between the whiskers there, too.Related content

thanks!
the piece of copper was domed, the fish was drawn on, then It was stuck in pitch and chasing tools were used to push it into shape and add detail.

This is such a lovely piece. You do some amazing metalwork. I have considered going into this medium, though I do not have the tools nor the appropriate space at this time. I suppose wirework is as far as I go for now Lovely work.

thanks!
You can get away with some pretty ghetto tools if you're broke, but I guess space can be an issue.

Beautiful piece. Looks like it would take forever to do. Especially in 16 gauge.
A friend who wants to get back into jewelry making asked me what books I would recommend. So, I thought I would beg the opinions of the artists of DA and compile them in my DA journal.
What three books would you most recommend about making jewelry? And may I post in my journal that you recommended them and place a link to your gallery?

Thanks for the comment and fav! It's always appreciated
As for books, it depends on what kind of jewellery he'll be getting into. Tim McCreight's complete metalsmith is usually a good place to start, it's got a bit of everything in there, though I can't say all his techniques are the most efficient out there. He's also got The metalsmith's book of boxes and lockets which I quite enjoy. (that last one also has awesome colour pictures. I'm a bit of a magpie when it comes to illustrations.)
If he'll be doing alot of stone setting, then The Diamond Setting Manual (who's author I unfortunatley can't recall the name of) is probably worth checking out. it's pretty comprehensive and covers just about any standard cut of stone you could possibly want set.
also, as an afterword, Jewellery Concepts and Technology by Oppi Untracht is also a really great referance book, if you can stomach the $150+ price tag. (which I can't. but the library has a copy, so that's OK.)
Those are my best suggestions. Unfortunatley, my personal library is pretty tiny. (Also, feel free to link to your heart's content)

Thanks for the book list. It will probably be about a week before I start compiling. Hopefully We'll all get some good ideas from this.

Except for the fact it oxidizes so easily, copper is a dream to work. And thanks!

Attached the koi to the leather, you mean? It's got four half-rings attached to the back. One on the tail, one on the back of the bezel, and two along the back of the body.

Ah. my guess would have been a type of tube soldered on the inside and the cord dtrung thru.

Tangfastic! How thick was the copper? Looks like it must have been an absolute sod, but great results.

Thanks! It was 16g, even though the guy I got it from swears on his mother's grave it was 18g. That was allright, though, becuse it made it effectively impossible to punch through and I suck at chasing.
