I'm actually attending college for a BFA (Which they assure me stands for "Big Faggy Artist" rather than Bachelor of Fine Arts) in jewellery/metalsmithing. I graduate this spring.

yeah - the snap makes it more like a flush setting where as the gypsy is hella hard and you essentially pull metal down on to the stone with a graver or some such thing. It's one setting i never managed to master lol

yeah, just do a half-snap. It's hella easier and if you finish it with a point burnisher nobody can tell the diffirence anyway.
Plus you can do it in steel and then everyone's hella impressed.

First off, that looks like gold, but what is a gypsy setting? I've never heard of that before...

it's a kind of setting where the stone is about level with the surface of the metal and there's no visible prongs or anything holding it in. I kind of cheat on mine and use a hybrid snap-setting technique. Message me if you're interested in the specifics

yeah, I love gypsy setting. It's a half-snap though, which I guess counts as cheating.
