A quick Tutorial on how I put together show accurate ponies.Future tutorials are on how to make specific elements.

Some of my tricks will cut across to other art programs, some will not.

Oooh, this will help. My unfortunate attempt at drawing ponies didn't turn out so well, my lines are sloppy and I'm fairly sure I missed some things. Hopefully I can improve with your tutorial.

I do all my work in photoshop, though even that is a pain because I forget to do things (like not doing color on my lineart layer)

Yes, but SAI does not do text, so it is either GIMP or MS Paint for text, and I choose the lesser of 2 evils

It's hard to use? It's almost the exact same as Photoshop, except the commands are in different places.

That's almost exactly the same as what I do (although I'm making vectors) I do put the eyes on top though. Does SAI have support for clipping masks? Because if so, it seems to me that you could use one on the horn instead of making two separate mane pieces.

You can use a clipping mask in Sai. You have two layers, the bottom base layer that it will be locked to and the top layer that will be clipped. On the top layer, select it and then check the box above the layers titled "Clipping Group." You can create multiple layers like this. There's also the ability to lock the layer itself and color on it without going outside the silhouette. Select the layer and check the box "Preserve Opacity."
