This also works for vectors made from other drawings or your own sketches. Frames from the show are used as an example because that's what most people do. Using the show as a reference or looking at other vectors from the show is a great way to learn.

This is a tutorial for people interested in making fan art that looks exactly like the show, so please feel free to ignore it if you have no interest in that. I'm not going to try to convince you to watch ponies, I submitted this only to pony groups.

Updated Oct. 9 2012. Overhauled a lot of the wording, added some new images, fixed the slightly blurred images. And if you didn't see it already, there is now a part two to this that goes over how to make outlines and use nodes.

I can't change the color of the line used to trace. (Forgot what its called) How can I change it to match the outline color of the pony? (If this magically says something about it, totally missed it)

Basically what I did was copy the link location, paste it in something like notepad, then copied JUST the outgoing link itself, then pasted it into my url bar! :>

I don't understand how a vector is different from a colored line art with transparent background

A vector means you can make the picture as BIG or small as you want, and it still looks just as good!Β Once the pic is completely vectored, all you have to do is export it at whatever resolution, no need to redo it again and again for different sizes! ^-^
Colored line art could even be vectored and exported as a png, and it would still have a transparent background~

Thank you for this great tutorial. I recently just downloaded Inkscape and am working hard to figure out how to use it. I'm trying to make MLP vectors on it and I hope it goes well.

You can't vector in GIMP, sadly...I mean, you can use tools that make it LOOK like you're vectoring, but the quality won't be constant.Β Inkscape is open source (free), too, though, so you've got nothing to lose! :>

I pointed this out on the club front page but I'll drop it here to.
Kinky Turtle, the one that did all the color guides, has updated through nearly all of S3 (no coronation dresses, but we have Games Ponies Play in there).
It doesn't have the tweaked guide for Tia's mane, but the rest are accurate.
