It's a little long for Ryou, but if all you're going to do is trim it, you don't need to add wefts. It's actually a VERY thick wig, and little clippings won't be long enough to make wefts anyway. ^^

I'm still working on it. XD I have many different methods for doing that, depending how high the spikes/bangs need to be and what material they are.

Thank you! ^^ the wefts are deceptively sturdy; I think the squishy caulk makes them feel a lot more fragile than they are.
(thank you XD)

d'aww :\ I've heard that a lot, unfortunately. The good news is you can actually get swatches of fiber about 3 feet long in just about any color, so if you want to fluff up your wig more, you could get one of those and make wefts out of it. ^^

do you mean combining two sections of fiber to make a longer section? I really don't believe that's possible, though you should look it up if you're interested!

Hnnng, now I would like to do Bakura myself! Thank you for this tutorial, though. I just started getting into altering my wigs since I haven't had much experience. It's a bit scary though, since the thought of caulking and possibly destroying an expensive wig is frightening but I'm getting braver! This tutorial makes me want to practice since I do have some caulk (not sure if it's the right kind, though). Thank you!!! @o@!!!

oh thank you for this! i've been sewing my wefts and my sewing machine does not appreciate it. it's an older machine so the fibers get down into the bobbin case and i wind up ruining all my extra hair!!

Ha, this is so cool! Did you cut the wig yourself (layers & fringe)? I'm cosplaying as Yami Bakura soon, so this could come in handy when it comes to styling, as i have a feeling that i'll need to add in some wefts. Am i better off buying 2 wigs or buying 1 long one to get the extra hair i'll need?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
birdewilliams In reply to superjumper007 [2010-11-29 22:40:02 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much! ^^ I did indeed. This is my Ryou wig though. I wanted it to have a lot more volume because Ryou's hair is poofy, while Yami's hair is sleek and jagged.
I would suggest going with the single wig. If you're getting one of high quality, it should be thick already; plus, getting one wig is cheaper than getting two. The one I got is here: [link] It's a VERY good price for how incredible the quality is. I have yet to find any other company that can match Hello Cosplay in quality. However... they're located in China, so the shipping cost makes up the difference. X'D But anyway, if you get that one wig, you'll find it's thick enough that you'll only need to use wefts made from the trimmings, not a whole separate wig.
My Yami wig is about half the length it started out, and my Ryou wig is less than that, and they're both filled in with all the trimmings from their respective originals. My Yami wig really doesn't have many wefts though (only 2, I think) -- you'll find this particular wig is VERY thick by itself. I just thought Ryou looked more accurate and more cutely innocent if his hair was thicker.
Hope this enormous rant helps!

Yes, it does help quite a lot, thanks. What do you think of this wig : [link] I'm going to get rid of all the fluff at the top and restyle it, and i think the fringe style and length would be ok. Your opinion?

birdewilliams In reply to superjumper007 [2010-11-30 05:30:20 +0000 UTC]
Ohhhh see I work with Punky wigs a LOT, and what you'll find is that a good two inches or so off the scalp is solid ratting (knotted fiber). You can't trim it or comb it. I use Punky wigs for Duke Devlin, and Punky XL wigs as the basis for Yugi, cause they're really conducive to hairstyles that defy gravity. They really don't make good Bakura wigs. ^_^;;

...darn. So should i just get a normal white wig? I don't honestly have enough experience or the right equipment to do things like wefting, so I'm trying to avoid doing it was much as i can. And also, how did you do the spikes on your YB wig? It looks very good, and i'd like to try it out when i finally get my wig.

birdewilliams In reply to superjumper007 [2010-11-30 13:59:59 +0000 UTC]
The wig that I linked you to in my first reply should be plenty thick enough for Bakura without needing to weft. You should probably rubber band your fibers and cut them off like shown in the tutorial, and save them just in case, but I've actually got my YB wig here with me in England and I've found that there actually aren't any wefts in this wig at all. XD (my memory for where my fiber goes is sometimes lax. haha)
Actually, I'm in the middle of making a tutorial like this one about how I made the YB bat wings. I used elmer's glue; it was =AngesPurs ' idea. I should have that up in the next day or so for ya!

This is very, very helpful! I really thank you for taking the time to make this, all of this information is gonna come in handy!
I''m doing my very first cosplay very soon, and I am, like you, cosplaying as Ryou. XD Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to buy a better quality wig online, so I bought one at a costume store. Unfortunately it isn't that great of quality, urgh. I'm having a hard time combing it and everything. >.< And it's thin, you can see majority of the cap it's sewn onto so this method you just showed us will be very very useful!!
Can I ask you a quick question? My wig is pretty coarse about halfway down. Is there anything I can do to solve this issue, a way to make it a bit less knoted and softer? I've tried to comb it but that didn't work out too well, I can't even really get a comb THROUGH the thing... :C
Really great tutorial!!

Wow, thanks for the enthusiasm, and I'm glad this was so helpful for you! I hope things work out alright!
What I do to keep my wigs soft is to wash them in lukewarm water with a tiny bit of Palmolive dish soap, and then use a good amount of this conditioner . It's very inexpensive for how much conditioner comes in the bottle, and it works miracles on my wigs. Probably the biggest tip I could give you is to wait until the wig is completely dry before you try to comb it; trying to comb wig fiber while it's wet will only stretch the fiber out and make your tangles so much worse. You could also use a standard spray-in detangler if you're really having trouble. ^^ Hope this helps!

DottedDinosaur In reply to birdewilliams [2010-05-22 01:16:08 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome!! :3
Hmmm, I'm running out of time for things so I don't think I'll be able to purchase the conditioner in time, ack. Is it possible to use any other kinds...? Like, does it have to be a special-purpose conditioner that's designed for wigs? Coud I get away with using a normal hair conditioner, or would that do more harm than good? -winces-
Thanks a bunch for all the info~!
