Description Hope this is helpful to you guys ^^ I know some of the pictures are discolored, I don't know why that happened, but I hope you can see them well enough anyway. ^,^

A few general things to remember about all wigs...

Keep your wig away from intense heat, as it will discolor and melt the fiber. This means no straightening or curling irons!!
When you're not using it, store it covered in cloth or plastic, to keep the dust off it.
Always use a comb, and NEVER a brush, to detangle your wig. Brushes work under the principle that removing loose hairs is a good thing; this is not the case with wigs, so you don't want to use a brush.
If your wig needs to be cleaned, wash it in cool water with a little Palmolive. Since caulk is waterproof, this is still safe on wigs with no-sew wefts; you'll just have to be a little more careful not to break the threads.

Oooh, I didn't realize that, sorry You *could* use a normal conditioner, but what works best for me in a pinch is a hydrating conditioner designed to lock in moisture. In any case, conditioner won't hurt your wig, but there's no saying it will make an improvement either. It might not have any effect since wigs are made out of plastic, not real hair. Buuuut it couldn't hurt to try! I'd still order the specialty conditioner just in case, since it *is* designed for plastics (I trust that woman with my wigs and my LIFE, lol).

You're welcome, not a problem! Happy to help!

Oh, there's no reason to apologize! XD
This is my first wig, first time styling, everything, so I'm nervous to do pretty much anything to it because I'm scared I'm gonna screw everything up. XD
I'm just nervous to use regular products because even though the hair isn't real, I'm afraid it will ruin the fibers or somehow cause the hair to fall out, you know? XD
About the dishwasher soap thing, could I use that in place of my shampoo? I know it's not the same but the only reason I'm washing it is to try to get some of the matted spots out... XD

Ahh, okay. Makes sense to be a bit nervous, hehe. I don't think you have to worry about any products making the wig dissolve or fall apart as long as you're not using, like, lacquer thinner. XD What you *do* have to watch out for is how careful you are with it. You can't get rough with it when washing it like you would with your own scalp, and you should never use a brush on a wig because it pulls fibers out, and that's not good when the fibers don't grow back.

As far as using dish soap instead of shampoo = yes, absolutely. Shampoo won't help the wig (won't hurt, but won't help). The wig doesn't care which soaps/shampoos you use because it's plastic. XD The way I see it is, you handwash your plastic dishes with Palmolive, right? So why not wash the plastic wig with the same thing? My wig tends to get yellowed around the top because of the chemicals I use to style it, but Palmolive takes that stain straight out. Hopefully it'll help with you too!

Ah I see, gentleness is a big key then, right? -nods-
Okay, so, dishwasher soap is a yes... Does it matter what kind? XD Because I know some chemicals found in dishwasher soap can be harmful to the wig, so... Would "Dawn" dishsoap work well enough? We use it to wash our hands sometimes, so if it's gentle enough for handwashing it's good to use on the wig, right?

birdewilliams In reply to DottedDinosaur [2010-05-22 03:24:10 +0000 UTC]

Yep, handling it carefully is the important thing. ^^ I don't believe the brand matters, as long as you get the hand-washing kind, not the actual dishwasher kind. And only use a little bit, like maybe a nickel-sized amount.

Of course!! I'm planning on putting up some pics of the wig itself when I'm done and I'm going to my first con very soon, so there'll be oceans of pics from that. XD
So far, I've managed to get the wefts actually put together; I went a bit overboard and made a bunch of them, probably about 12. I had to trim the wig's edges, which was just as long as the back in certain places, so there's a bunch of tiny wefts as well.
They're drying on my dining room table at the moment actually. XD
Quick question though... Isn't caulk hard to penetrate, let alone sew through? -scratches head- So how did you manage to sew yours when the caulk dries so hard? If, for some reason I can't manage to sew through mine (let's hope not! -crosses fingers-), would I just be able to put a tiny bit of caulk on the wefts already attached to the wig and have it stick together that way as an alternative, final option method? XD

Awesome! I look forward to seeing them! You can feel free to post some pics under the "cosplay" folder in #YuGiOh-Fan-Club ; I'm coadmin over there and I'd love to see your work in the club.

Oh it's all good; there are 10 wefts in my Ryou wig and I plan on adding a couple more, so don't feel like you've gone overboard. Haha, that's awesome!

Caulk is surprisingly easy to work with. It's VERY malleable. It only gets hard and crusty after it's been exposed to direct sunlight for years. If you've ever seen Elmer's "rubber cement," that is just another word for caulk, except it's applied with a paintbrush instead of a squeeze-tube. It's sticky as hell and a very effective adhesive, but easy to puncture through. What brand of caulk did you get? Just wanna make sure we're working with the same material here.

I'll let you know when I'm done, you may have to help me though, I'm a bit on the slow side when it comes to manuvering dA, especially with this new version 7. XD
So far I've only added about two of these wefts to my bangs and I can already see a difference with the volume!!
You're right, the caulk is surprisingly easy to work with! I was a bit surprised by that. XD I've used the rubber cement before, it's so sticky and most of the times I wind up with it on my hands. XD I didn't use the rubber cement for this project though. I used an actually tube of caulk and a caulking gun. The gun causes too much to shoot out though so I just put some of the caulk in a bowl and worked with it that way. XD I used the same method as you explained in the tutorial though and it works just the same! My brand of caulk dries white though, not clear. XDD

Okie-dokie, not a problem! Happy to help

Cooool, I'm glad it's working so far! It's really cool to hear a positive report, yaaay ^^

Ahhh, okay. I just got a hand-squeezable tube of the Kwik Dry brand because I am soooo clumsy that I would destroy a caulking gun. XD *fail* But yeah, it doesn't matter whether it dries clear or white; that just depends on the brand. As long as it's not like, neon pink, it won't show through the fiber.

I'm planning on submitting some pics of the wig itself, I have about two wefts left to go! :3
Haha I HIGHLY doubt you'd destroy a caulking gun. XD Unless you're Supahman?
Lol yeah, even though it dries white the hair hides it well enough, which is good! And whoa, is there actually neon pink caulk? Or did you make that up? XD

Wai thank you! ^^ I'm glad you found it useful!

I'm actually putting together a couple more wig tutorials right now. The one is styling gravity-defying hair (using Yami Bakura) and the other is cutting bangs and layers (using Thief King Bakura), so I can link those to you when I'm done if you like ^^

birdewilliams In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-02-03 01:55:10 +0000 UTC]

Cool, glad I could help! I got my caulk at wal-mart. The clear-drying kind comes in a red squeezable tube. It's in the hardware department, with the primer and paint and electrical stuff. ^^
