Description Edit 3 : Still working on this, though it's going slow. Still quite a bit refining to do, and then to do some brush work, and make that face less Photoshop smooth.




I don't particularly like using references for images that I may consider one day selling as prints, but if I can't get some acceptable forms on those flowers I may have to cave in. They started as quite sharp and pointy leaves, but they've eventually ended up rounded. It's not just about lines, but the shading as well, quite a few of them just doesn't look like they have a petal thickness. They seem chunky and too solid.

I also don't quite know how to improve the far background, I imagine some willow trees and suchlike, but it doesn't look quite right as it is.

Any others comment to help me making the submerged figure more realistic in the water, improving the composition or anything that comes to mind, feel free to share your opinion

Wonderfully painted. The searoses and the woman look awesome. I like the unespected perspective, too. Only thing I would critisize, is, you can do the sky darker or brighter, so the watcher can easier difference between water and sky.

I think this piece is great! Admittedly, though, I first thought this was fan-art for Disney's Mulan, as I recall there was a scene where she bathed in a river? Only because of this do I suggest adding some extra characteristic to her face---a scar, a tattoo, body paint, maybe even just dirt--just so she doesn't look so much like Mulan did.

I know it's silly (Especially since Mulan is *how* old?) but I was forced into this corner with one of my own characters thanks to Harry Potter; Before the books ever came out, I came up with my design, but thanks to a much more popular character with brown hair and round glasses. . .I switched 'em to rectangles, and no one's compared them since (Oddly enough; Maybe the popularity is finally dying out? )

That's my only thoughts; It looks amazing aside from the fact I, personally, thought that this was Mulan at first XD But I'll probably be the only one to say so, so ignore me completely if you like

Thank you very much for the feedback I'm not sure if I would change her very much based on a resemblance I can't really see myself.
Though I was a wee bit too old when Mulan got out for it to make a deep impression and for me to rewatch it later for nostalgic reasons. I remember best the scene where she cuts of her hair and that half reflection in the sword completing her face thingy.

Though I'm also not really done with her face and skin in general, so maybe when that get's more finished it won't be so cartoon like Still, thank you for sharing your opinion and your own experience.

This is truly a lovely painting. It's instantly reminded me of Mulan and the scene during the song "Reflection" But that's not why this is a lovely piece.
The colours are gorgeous and cheerful and that stands as a contrast to the struggling person who looks like he/she is drowning...

Thank you I'm not too sure I know myself, so it's open season on interpretation Though I suspect the drowning part is rather immediate, and while there is much beauty around, it still doesn't improve the situation.

i really like the quality of this. It's very 'sharp' and I like that I read that you prefer not using references, which I think is a big mistake. No big painter doesn't use references. From where else do you learn if not from life? I suggest finding some good photos to help you. At the moment I think the lighting is the most confusing. The character and the flowers are painted as in full daylight, while the water reflection and background suggests that it's night time. Incorporating more blue in the plants/characters will bring them closer to the blueness of the sky. Finding references on flowers at night and faces at night will give you an idea of what type of shading is appropriate! I hope my feedback helps

Than you very much for the feedback, and it's much appreciated And I do look at photos and try my best to learn from them, I just don't want to go so far as to copy since I may one day wish to sell this image as print. And you are right about the lighting, I'll try to sneak more blue into it. I just worry if I darken it too much or make it too blue the face and flowers will fall back visually and not pull the attention as well anymore.
