Description
I still haven't managed to decide which creature I want for NorwayHim as a Huldrekarl would be pretty interesting because of that hollow back design, but in terms of story I can't think of any interesting role for him to play
But as a Nokken (stuck in the horse shape) would be easier to fit in the story, but it wouldn't be very creative either
Any suggestions?

Traditionally Hulders were women with cow tails that would lure young men into the mountain where they would be trapped, where did the big hole in the back come from? Also NΓΈkkens were usally water spirits that would play theire music to lure people into the water and trap them in water vegitation to drown them, where did the horse come from? Not to complain, just wondering because i am Norwegian and know these legends, please reply. Thank you

I came across several sources that said many Huldras have a hollow back, along with the cow or fox tail
As for theΒ NΓΈkken many sources say they're shape shifters and one of their forms is a white or misty looking horse
But I admit my knowledge can only go as far as the internet takes me, so any input is valuable

Nokkens remind me of Kelpies, are they somehow related?

Actually, it's the Kelpie that's the horse. A Nokken is more humanoid, taking the form of a fiddle player to lure people into the water, sort of like a male, Nordic, landlocked siren.

I feel like the only one who'd vote for the Huldrekarl I dunno, I think a hollow-backed pixie creature seems to fit Norway more than a magical-horse beast. Though whichever one you prefer I guess uwu/

Considering he's already considered to have a strong relationship with magic it would make sense not to change as much
It's so hard to pick Xp

Yeah :/ Whichever you prefer uwu/
By the way, out of interest, what kind of a creature is England? I don't think I know of any human/rabbit creatures!

Birvan In reply to ellymango [2014-09-11 19:16:50 +0000 UTC]
He's technically a rabbit wood sprite. I cheated a bit because I was trying to stay as close to canon creature designs (England with bunny ears) when I first created the story
But after some digging he does have a lot of rabbit and hare stories, so it kind of fits

I would prefer the Nokken design actually ^^
Your art is amazing as always!
I know a Norwegian mythical creature called Fenrir. I don't really know much about it but here's the wikipedia anyways XD en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenrir

Seems pretty much most people just like (creepy) horses XD
Personally myth creatures tied to the Gods doesn't appeal to me, especially when they exist on more than one country (it could sound like I consider that country more important than the others). Also Fenrir is a specific individual, which makes me shy away further

From what I read the nightmare also exists in the norwegian lore (though it doesn't look like a horse at all)

why not both? aΒ Huldrekarl that can turn into a Nokken?
π: 0 β©: 2
Birvan In reply to GuloBorealis [2014-09-10 19:03:28 +0000 UTC]
Because he won't be able to use shapeshifting. It would take longer to learn than the story would last

Nokken if only because angry water horses with fangs are awesome.

I'll have to see if it fits well into the story *but yeah, scary horse is awesome by default* XD

Well, if the Nokken would be easier to work with story wise, then I'd say go with that. But I do like the Huldrekarl design as well....tough choices.

Of course, the better to lure and drown you with XD

NΓΈkken would be very cute and nice if he eventually learns to shapeshift^^
But dayum, your huldrekarl version is really nice lookinnnggg ><

Birvan In reply to PuffinPixel [2014-09-10 19:05:11 +0000 UTC]
I'll probably have to check which myth I should pick for Iceland first. That should help decide the best group dynamic for the story
