LuΓs Fernandes Teixeira
LuΓs after LuΓs Vaz de CamΓ΅es, our more famous poet
Fernandes because it's the portuguese version of Spain's surname (they are brothers after all)
Teixeira because it's a surname that's been around since the XI-XII century. Also it's related to the yew tree and the name of a portuguese town (random facts)

I see, so was he an explorer of the world? I mean, Portuguese ships crossed seas and oceans!

Yeah he was. And a bit of the devil merchant as well
But he did suffer a series of traumatic events that left really deep scars > >

Really? What events? I admit I do not know that part of history (lacking of most of history events between Middle Age and French Revolution, damn...)

No worries, didn't expect you to
It was mainly:
- the Iberian Union. Port lost his king and had no heir to the throne, so Spain came and took over. He was kicked out 60 years later, but he had been drained of resources and lost part of his fleet when Spain included his ships in the Spanish Armada (that England sank)
- the 1755 earthquake. It hit Lisbon on a catholic holiday (November 1st), killing 40,000-50,000 people. It was one of the most destructive earthquakes in history
- the Peninsular War. Though neither France nor Spain managed to conquer him in the 3 Napoleonic Invasions, this resulted the king and family leaving Port to fend for himself and losing his exclusive trade routes with Brazil (which eventually led to the colony's independence)
In short Port was impoverished, weak and in a big state of chaos (people no longer trusted the monarchy)

Geez...It seems Portugal and Spain had a lot of conflicts throught history. More or less what happened here in Italy between the Italian States and France or Austria, unfortunately my homeland was the battlefield for almost all conflict between European kingdoms for centuries: Germans, Greeks, Arabians, Frenchmen, Slavs, Russians, Austrians. Man, history is a bad thing sometime =_=

Considering Port lives right at the edge of Europe he always lived rather isolated and was spared from most conflicts
But yeah, Europe is a series of crazy wars and sadly Italy was right in the middle of many Xp
