Description
I completely forgot I had this sitting around in a folder gathering dust. It's been so long I don't even remember the name of each species...[Edit:] I hunted down the names again: Indrik/Elasmotherium (the largest one), Camahueto (the bovine one), European Unicorn (the white one), Karkadann (the stripped one), Shadhavar (the gazelle like one) and Monocerus (the bottom-right one)

if unicorns exist this is what they would have really looked like, and I knew their had to be different types apart from the rino!

There's also the qilin, or ki-rin. Both are found in East Asia. I'd have to say those East Asian ones are among my favorite unicorns. But yours are good too!

Probably not I'm afraid. I'm too tight on time at the moment and this was more of a spur of the moment kind of thing

you know horses do have the genetics to make horns like that their just not turned on like a rhino's genetics

Honestly that doesn't surprise me. It's the same with chickens and teeth
Though I wonder how they'd end up looking like...

Well sense the horse is related to the rhino they might have their horn look quite similar

Or might not. There were a lot of cousins floating around in those days with all sorts of horn designs

Thank you. I simply love breaking the "horned-horse" unicorn mold. There so many other interesting interpretations out there, the camahueto being one of them

Sadly some people aren't so open minded and keep insisting the horse version is the only real one

well, is not your fault they're wrong... one horned ungulated appear in mythology all the world, and that's just a unicorn... people dont have any trouble calling dragon to western demigods, american gods or demons from middle east, so why they don't like this creatures being called "unicorns"? that's just dumb

It's a side effect from intense marketing and several media. They get so use to seeing a single, "unified" version of the myth, they don't stop to think and realize the other versions are just as valid, but just not as popular
But no, the only time I take offense is those who are overly aggressive about it and believe their view is the only valid one

Emela-Ntouka? (The biggest one) Karkadann (the zebra-like unicorn), Shadhavar (the brown antelope one), Abada (the white one)
Dunno about the Yak one and the gazelle one.

I managed to hunt down the names again and updated the description
I didn't know about the Emela-Ntouka one though. You have a great knowledge of myths

Thanks! I just love monsters of all types, and mythology/folklore/cryptids brew about the most interesting ones!
My favorite unicorn is always the Shadhavar, but the Karkadann is also very cool, I mean if your name translates to Lord/King of the Desert! :-p
Indrik! Oh that is the other option I forgot about! Indrik is the biggest unicorn in mythology, and more so than Emela-Ntouka that isn't really a unicorn at all.

Birvan In reply to Gancanagh22 [2015-01-15 14:42:59 +0000 UTC]
I can't pick between the Karkadann and the Indrik XD
One of my personal pet projects is to create an evolutionary line tying several myth creatures together. I already have one going for the hexapods (that needs some expansion), but I'm also pondering on creating one for the unicorns and merfolk
*Other pet project is my Brewing Trouble story, which also involves digging up lots of lesser known myths around the world*
I may actually start using your lists for inspiration
