Description I came up with this idea while I waiting for a meeting and drew the rough version on my notebook
Ended up researching for actual references on the horse evolution, adapting it to the hexapod locomotion and later to the centaur evolution

It was a fun exercise and a good practice for my artbook concept, but I can't say I'm completely pleased with it
The references I've found weren't very good ones and it feels like some of the species I've used weren't the right ones

If you know of good sites or well written (and illustrated) books on the tree of life please let me know. The information I have access to is broken in many places DX

This reminds me of Centaur no Nayami. Because in Centaur no Nayami all tetrapod life evolves from six-limed animals, which is why things like centaurs, angels, and dragon-folk exist, very similar to this.

Yeah, It would be intresting if animals had 6 limbs...

I swear i saw this somewhere else.
Anyway, since this is clearly the original version, I like how you merged the primate evolution with horse evolution. Makes much more sense than Zeus screwing a horse XP

Dwoll In reply to GSnail [2012-11-24 00:18:16 +0000 UTC]

Excuse me but the orrigin of centaurs is when Zeus made Nephele(a cloud nymph) in order to punish Ixion. Then, because Ixion was really into horses his son was Centaurus. Centaurus then mated with his fathers mares.

GSnail In reply to Dwoll [2012-11-25 03:04:39 +0000 UTC]

By "Zeus screwing a horse", I just meant an impossible mythological explanation of some sort, as opposed to a logical progression that could have happened on a planet with hexapods instead of tetrapods. But thank you for that interesting factoid.

I still need to change some minor details to fit with other evolutions

very well thought out (not just saying that cus i had the same idea too ) but your method goes further back than my idea did, for that i applaud you

Oh? Now I'm curious how you did yours

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

RoFlo-Felorez In reply to Birvan [2011-10-27 04:37:40 +0000 UTC]

well i had a similar concept from 6-finned fish -> 6 limbed reptile -> 6 limbed mammal -> 6-limbed early horse -> centaur, but i didnt think of adding diapsids/anapsids into the timeline like you did, the world i put my centaurs in exists in a universe where mythological creatures evolved in place of the dinosaurs w/o a KT event, and i guess maybe thats why i forgot the synapsids

lol that's really not cool! Not plausible maybe, but really awesome and makes it seem plausible--which is more important in art.

My life needs more caveman-centaurs in it.

TheWingedShadow [2010-02-25 09:53:22 +0000 UTC]

Now this is absolutely gorgeous. Not a horse-human hybrid but an own species, looking plausible and believable.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Birvan In reply to TheWingedShadow [2010-02-26 01:29:08 +0000 UTC]

Personally I'm not much of a fan of the pure horse-human hybrid type. It tends to look awkward and unnatural

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

TheWingedShadow In reply to Birvan [2010-02-26 10:57:54 +0000 UTC]

Indeed.
I myself love hexapodal creatures, three of the races of my world are hexapodal, but they are everything but not human, at least in their appearance.
I find the centaur concept really interesting and I think, one could really come up with some interesting, original concepts of this race, like the one of yours.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Birvan In reply to TheWingedShadow [2010-02-27 23:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Feel free to use it. All I did was adapt the evolution system anyway ^^

SilmarwenI [2010-02-25 04:51:49 +0000 UTC]

If you're looking at specifically equine evolution, they're generally fairly well mapped out. You probably already saw these buuut just in case:

[link]

I couldn't track down what came before hyracotherium though.

This is a cute idea!

Yeah I followed something similar back then. Though I admit finding out the older branches that tie us to the first proto-mammals wasn't easy

Lord-Triceratops [2010-02-24 20:20:40 +0000 UTC]

Try "The Macmillan Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals, a Visual Who's WHo of Prehistoric Life." It's not the greatest paleontology book out there, and the format isn't great (Page one-two: bunch of random dinosaurs/mammals/fish/whatever from a family. Pages three-four: boring facts about most of them) but it does have life trees for the major classes and orders. Also, it's a little outdated. Sorry that I couldn't find more, but I don't have a whole lot on prehistoric mammals. The Discovery Channel has made a few books. Try them.
