I immediately thought "Roy DeCarava" when I saw this.
I love how close you've cropped, but wonder if it really matters what truck they were in as per your added text. If so, wouldn't a reframing with relevant information (text) on truck be appropriate. In my mind that would have been a more powerful image.

What an interesting reply. Thank you so much for it.
You ask a great question and bring up some interesting issues.
My intent was for my remarks to give context and location to the picture - as opposed to the 'City College' aspect of it being the image's focal point. Of course, it could be argued that since the two girls on the right have City College ribbons around their necks, that aspect of the pic is self-explanatory...
Ultimately, first and foremost I wanted the picture to encapsulate the girls' faces and body gestures. At the distance from which I was shooting, the lens I used (70-300mm), wouldn't have been able to do a wide angle shot. So for most of my shooting at this parade, I mainly concentrated on faces and bodies.
Please don't see my comments as being a refutation of your critique. It's not meant that way. I only mean to shine light on my intent. I relish the opportunity to see my stuff through others' critical eyes...helps me grow. Thanks again!

Andrew,
Good point on the lanyards. I had been so much focused on the faces I missed them. Your intent was accomplished. I love looking at images of people when they are oblivious to the camera and you do it so well here. I know I always appreciate a thoughtful critique on my work.
Thank you for the reply.

I'm guessing that you must fire off hundreds of shots before you happen on one with these old world, renaissance poses and painterly interrelationships and richness of tones-- you've got one of the most beautiful and more and more recognizablestyles I've ever seen...

Thank you, sincerely, for all that you said, Raffa. It is my pleasure and joy to photograph people in public just being themselves. You're right. At events like this, I do take many, many shots, hoping to catch a few memorable ones. That day was grey, overcast and occasionally rainy...perhaps not considered optimal for a parade & picnic, but perfect for bringing out the colors and balanced tones of people and things. This event is a celebration of the people, many of whom are poor folks, financially speaking. But it is their/our day...one that I looked forward to attending all year...a day of a people who are very much alive.

Great philosophical understandings for a photographer to have; what I notice more and more in your particular work is the ability to catch a gesture at its zenith, at the pinnacle of the movement, and somehow manage to do that even when there's more than one figure in the frame; the fact that you're doing it candidly and not meticulously ordaining those conditions in a studio just makes it all the more remarkable...
