Two Dauntless class starships drop out of quantum slipstream and intercept unidentified spatial objects entering Federation space near the Lytosian Nebula. One of the fastest ships ever built, the Dauntless class had a sophisticated Quantum Slipstream Drive that made it perfect as a long-range interceptor. Though small, it was fast, agile, and very powerful.

The Dauntless class was used by the Federation in the 26th century along with the Enterprise J as it is seen in the background of the battle of Procyon V. The alien Arturis seems to have seen the design in the Federations' future, and it was from this experience that he patterned his trap for the U.S.S. Voyager - the highly advanced illusion of the Dauntless class with its Quantum Slipstream Drive, making it one of the fastest ships ever built. He almost succeeded in convincing Captain Janeway it was the real Federation ship from the future.
