Exobiologists Magnus and Erin Hansen pilot the U.S.S. Raven up a river-course in a storm on an uninhabited planet as they work their way into the unexplored Delta Quadrant in search of the mysterious cyborgs beings known as the Borg. Young Annika Hansen broods in the living compartment, watching the lightning illuminate the turbulent world they are visiting. She'd like to stay and explore, but her parent's obsession with the Borg drive them on into the unknown realms of space and they'll only stop here long enough to collect raw materials they picked up on scanners that might help them repair a misalignment in the starboard warp nacelle after a rough meteor storm last week.

Annika turns back to her favorite poem:

    Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,

        Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted—
