I agree, they do look better running around. I live in the woods, and we have coyotes, bobcats, wolves. People get attacked because they are idiots...We get to close to animals because we are nosey! That is why they attack...I agree with ouchmyeyes, they should be able to run around.Β

People who collect pelts love animals just as well. Both dead and alive.

Lot1rthylacine In reply to ouchmyeyes [2014-03-01 13:05:53 +0000 UTC]

We collect these pelts, skulls and other things BECAUSE we like these animals. There is almost no better way to learn from them like this! Many collectors use them as art reference too, because no picture gives a better idea of their fur than a pelt Β

Yes, most of these animals are killed for population control, which is very important for both men and animal. Take these coyotes, they are a real pest in some places in the USA. They form a threat for other predators which aren't that numerous.Β

Most collectors have nothing to do with their death, they just want to preserve their beauty rather than to let them rot away.

ouchmyeyes In reply to Lot1rthylacine [2014-03-02 09:34:51 +0000 UTC]

Now THAT is a good statement ^^ Yet animal controll it completely unnessesary in my eyes. When a population grows too large they inevitably is not enough food causing the weak ones to die. The strong ones have less babies than the year before and the balance is restored. You can find this theory back in about every high school biology book by the way if you don't believe me. Now people hunt down and kill both strong and weak animals, Therefor allowing the weak animals to have babies alongside the strong ones slowing down evolution. Anyway I cannot blame people for not wanting to have coyotes in their gardens (even though they were there first). So let's say I agree with the whole population control thing. There in nothing to garantee me that the animal was killed for population controll or just because the shop was running low on stock. Also I disagree that the collector has nothing to do with their death. If there's demand then animals will be killed for it, sometimes under the excuse of population controll and sometimes just for the market. Problem is you have a 50% chance with ending up with the wrong one. Now I do agree that and animal's pelt is a GREAT reference, but why need 11? Are their skins all really that different in texture and feeling? To be honest I doubt that, one pelt is more than enough in my eyes.Β

It is very important. Take the bighorn sheep, they are critically indangered in some places. They're being hunted by cougars, of which there are too many in that place. If it continues like that, the bighorn sheep won't survive. And if they don't, neither will the cougars themselves. Since hunters have been hunting cougars, it's been going a lot better with the bighorns. People follow nearly every cougar they see in that area, if they find one that actively hunts bighorns, they shoot it. They don't just shoot every cougar they see. If you don't believe me, there's a documentary on youtube, I believe it's called Cougar vs. bighorns

Every animal is different. You might see that on this picture. I have two fox pelts myself, and it fascinates me how different they are. Having a lot of pelts learns you a lot about biodiversity!Β

ouchmyeyes In reply to Lot1rthylacine [2014-03-05 19:05:11 +0000 UTC]

So there are times when hunting is neccesary, I can agree to that, yet what about all the animals killed just for selling their skins?

Hmm, nah I still think one is enough ^^ I know they're different, but when you specialise in drawing fur you can make realistic changes to the original without having to kill another animal. And I prefer that approach.Β

Lot1rthylacine In reply to ouchmyeyes [2014-03-05 23:38:35 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a supporter of that either...

not ALL animals were killed and it's not just for drawing fur there is a lot to learn about the animals if you have more.Β
