Description
So this is related to *Valgaror 's recent journal concerning what may have been a removal of an avatar either because it was flashing or because it contained a swastika. So just to be certain, I've included both.
Most people have no idea that the swastika was not originally a Nazi symbol and that there are archaeological records as far back as 4000BC, which appears on pottery left behind by the Samarra, an ancient culture in what is now Iraq.
The swastika appears in many cultures and religions as a symbol of peace, harmony and in some cases represents the four corners or eternity.
The swastika is actually not a symbol of hate either. It was misused and quite possibly misinterpreted by the Nazi movement the same way people misused the Spanish/Portuguese word for black, negro. It's quite likely Hitler meant to use the swastika as a symbol of spreading the white movement to all four corners of the world, though there are many other theories on this subject.
While the one on the left represents (is perceived as) hate/war, the one on the right represents love/peace.
Remember...
Context always matters.
So what you see here is not what you see here .
Edit: Perhaps I should have clarified it better. I'm not saying that the NS symbol is a symbol of hate/war, I'm stating that that's how it's perceived by people in general.
So wtf is up with removing the avatar?
I guess we'll find out one way or another.

A really good point here, even here in Finland it was used in military aircraft but now it can't be because ignorant people associate it with the stolen symbol of other ignorant people. And who are westeners to go tell others not to use this symbol. "We don't want you to use this symbol because one of us stole it for his group of idiots and now we are offended." I mean bunch of white westeners trying to force others to theyr ideas, isn't that exactly what Hitler was all about?
We could just as well be offended by cross because of crusades and abortion clinic bombings. The point is that we shouldn't let fanatics to influence our thoughts.

I guess it has been removed because of the symbol, not flashing. The Nazi symbol is banned in many countries and the original symbol treated alike. Pity, because it is ancient Slavic symbol, too, you may see it in Slavic Neopaganism and reenactment symbolism. In the end all have roots in India. dA staff could educate themselves and judge better.

And don't see how that can be confused for a nazi-swatztika.
But I have epilepsy, so I can receive seizures easily, it was probably taken down for fear of people having seizures. And maybe because it looked like a nazi-swatztika.

From what I remember, some time ago I've read that what is knows as swastika is actually pronounced SU-ASTI in Sanskrit, meaning "He is good" (He being God) and represents rays of the Sun.
It was meant to show God's love for all his children and that he is a source of all life. Germans took that symbol and turned it around so it represents opposite and on top of that they rotated it 45 degrees as if it is moving, advancing. Pretty much German swatsika means something along the lines of "advancing darkness".
I prefer original idea, despite being against religions

i'm pretty sure you already know this (as you seem well-versed and studied in this) but i feel the need to say that the origin of the swastika was a symbol of the sun. it means unity and optimism and moving forward.

The swastika have had many meanings in a lot of different cultures around the world. In Europe the swastika used to be a symbol of luck and that (I believe) is the sole reason Nazi-German used it in their flag and elsewhere.

But how do you animate with that framerate

BlackJill In reply to Elfuun [2012-03-06 05:55:57 +0000 UTC]
If you mean the fade in and out animation along with the flash frame rate, it's simple.
When fading in or out, the longer it takes the slower it will become. So if I fade the opacity in or out in increments of 5% while using a 0.03 frame rate, I can still achieve a smooth animation and still be able to have the flashing in between.
Also, with Photoshop, you're able to control the frame rate of each frame. For example, if I want the first five frames to be 0.5, the five frames in the center 5.0 and the last five frames being 0.05, I can do that. How it looks will depend on the amount of frames I use. The faster the frame rate, the more frames I need in order to achieve a smooth animation.
If you're using Gimp, simply use more layers of the object you're animating. For example, create your animation layer by layer, than merge each of those layers into single layers that will become your frames. Then with each frame, add your (####ms) in the name of each frame and go to Filter -> Animation -> Playback. Observe to see if the animation is smooth, if not, go back and either create** or delete frames, or adjust your timing. Repeat until you've achieved your desired animation.
** If you're creating more frames, check to see if the motion of the animation is smooth or jumpy. If you want something to go slow, make certain you move the object only a little bit (a few pixels) at a time for each frame. If you want it to go faster, increase the space between each position.
Example: For a slow animation -> X X X X X X X X If the X's were animated, they'd seem to glide across smoothly because there is little space between each of them on each frame.
For a faster animation: X X X X X X This would make them seem to move faster.
Be sure to match the motion of the animation with the frame rate. Like the fading opacity, the faster your frame rate is the slower you want your object to move so that when it's actually animated it will look smoother.
I hope this helps, if not I could see about making a tutorial. V:

Thank you so much for spreading that information.
I knew it was a Buddhist symbol, since my uncle's a Buddhist and he passed that info onto me, but I didn't know it was in other countries as well.
Besides, wouldn't DA not have the right to remove it if it were a swastika anyway? The Nazi party is a legitimate political party and they have a right to represent themselves as long as they're not acting against the rules, am I right?

I support this, so much.
I find your information very interesting, there are things about that symbol I never knew before. Do the people here on dA who have the 'Nazi' symbol support peace, or are they more on Hitlers side? Wondering because I've never really gotten a chance to see what their views are.
As far as the avatar, it's too bad dA's admins don't seem to fix their own wrong actions. They like to post up a journal trying to get white knights to agree with them, or say nothing at all. Either way, nothing changes since they must always be right.

Luckmann In reply to ??? [2012-03-03 10:53:50 +0000 UTC]
Both of those are exactly the same. The swastika is a symbol that was chosen by national-socialism because of it's implied meanings. Slander doesn't change that and by pretending that "One is not like the other", you are merely reinforcing this standard of doublethink, where one thing chosen as symbol by someone is all right, while the same thing chosen as a symbol by someone else isn't.
I turn it left, I turn it right, I switch it upside down and encase it in a circle, I add dots or swirls, but the fact remains; A swastika is a swastika is a swastika.

BlackJill In reply to Luckmann [2012-03-03 19:17:35 +0000 UTC]
No, I said "One is not like the other" because dA removed an avatar and we believe it's because it had a swastika on it, so I was playing on how people believe they're different. Though each culture has different uses or meanings for it, the shape is nonetheless pretty standard, with some exceptions of course.

Ah, well, fair enough then. I still feel that it is a bit misrepresentative, implying the statement that Swastika does in fact not equal swastika.
But art is almost all about interpretation, after all.
