Description
So this is related to *Valgaror 's recent journal concerning what may have been a removal of an avatar either because it was flashing or because it contained a swastika. So just to be certain, I've included both.
Most people have no idea that the swastika was not originally a Nazi symbol and that there are archaeological records as far back as 4000BC, which appears on pottery left behind by the Samarra, an ancient culture in what is now Iraq.
The swastika appears in many cultures and religions as a symbol of peace, harmony and in some cases represents the four corners or eternity.
The swastika is actually not a symbol of hate either. It was misused and quite possibly misinterpreted by the Nazi movement the same way people misused the Spanish/Portuguese word for black, negro. It's quite likely Hitler meant to use the swastika as a symbol of spreading the white movement to all four corners of the world, though there are many other theories on this subject.
While the one on the left represents (is perceived as) hate/war, the one on the right represents love/peace.
Remember...
Context always matters.
So what you see here is not what you see here .
Edit: Perhaps I should have clarified it better. I'm not saying that the NS symbol is a symbol of hate/war, I'm stating that that's how it's perceived by people in general.
So wtf is up with removing the avatar?
I guess we'll find out one way or another.

Naw, I was poking a bit of fun at $'s reasoning for removing such avatars.

The NS swastika doesn't represent "hate and evil", goshdarn. It represents the fucking sunwheel and the movement itself. It's not a swastika either, it's a hakenkreuz.
I think the US had done many "evil deeds", so clearly, the bald eagle is a symbol of bare and war. I demand all images of bald eagles to e removed from the site.

What name it's given is irrelevant, it's still a swastika shape. There are plenty of other cultures who also use this shape and also give it a different name, and I could go list them all but it'd take a short while to find every instance of this shape in as many cultures as possible, find their names, meanings and usage as well. When you look up the hakenkreuz, it's also defined as a swastika, or hooked cross.
But yeah, I do wonder what they were thinking when removing that avatar. I hope we get to find out soon.

I was simply stating that that's how it's generally perceived.

Reading through the comment, I've noticed that you said that the swastika was becoming a trend here in Québec by the /edgy/ kids. Are you talking about the city or the province? Because here in Montreal I haven't seen much of it to be honest. But I have noticed a large movement of CEGEPians that are sporting the hammer and sickle symbol ever since the occupy fad started... Even if most of them admit to not being a part of the communist party. I guess people doing anything be part of the cool crowd is still relevant.
In my opinion, not matter the origin of the symbol, people will often give it the meaning they want to. A lot of so-called evil, black magic, satanic symbols that high-school girls uses in their goth-witch phase are in fact pretty positive in their original meaning. But I guess we have to thank the church and human history for taking things that are different and calling them satanic or evil. Misinterpretation is a common thing today about old symbols, and very few people take the time to actually read a book and learn about them. I guess it's easier to ''learn'' by watching movies and tv! Because we know that they're reliable sources!

I say Quebec as province because I don't want to give away my specific location in Quebec, or at least try not to. I've noticed a lot of the younger crowd either drawing, using temporary tattoos or stitching it into their clothing with thread or using patches. I've asked a few of them what they think it means and they've all pretty much gave me the same answer, peace/harmony. I noticed it on a lot of emo/punk looking kids mostly, and even seen one with it shaved into his head.
Could be that I'm just anal retentive or they're the same general group of kids in that area. But when my friends and I are going out, we see them hanging around in parking lots and metros late at night, we point them out and have a chuckle. We seen a few in bars, one of them got notice by some other drunk and it started a bar fight. I guess some people don't believe the whole it's a peace sign thing, especially when they're too drunk to give a shit.
I can also relate to how the Church took things and made them out to be evil and/or Satanic, being that I'm also Metis (First Nations), this was something the Church also did to Natives. They tried taking away our language, our gods and our culture by trying to convince us that we were the savages and the things we held dear were somehow the work of their devil. When we tried explaining, I guess they didn't want to listen either.

That's understandable, not everyone wants to tell their location online. Aha, I'm not surprised that it's the emo-punk crowd doing this, seems like the kind of fad they would adopt. Even if their definition isn't too far from the truth yet somewhat lacking, I still do wonder if they only do it to be cool and edgy like you said earlier. Sure, the swastika has a peaceful meaning but they have to be aware that not everyone knows that and must get some kind of fun at seeing most regular people look at them in horror or disapproval. They're still trying to be a bunch of rebels in some way in my opinion.
From what you're saying, I'd guess those kids are part of the same crowd, taking in consideration that you seem to see them fairly often. Ah, I'd probably have a chuckle seeing them too! And that whole bar fight thing is so ironic, adopting a peace sign as a symbol and yet not following what it means.
Oh yes, that is so true. I find this so sad since they don't teach nearly enough in schools what happened to the Native Nations here with the whole Christian conversions and the ''savages'' deal in history classes. I think that text books here still spread the belief that it went somewhat too smoothly. Canada in general has this image that we always were the most pacifist part of North America, but we still had slavery, from both Natives and Afro-Americans, and some pretty gruesome raids, not to use the term genocide, on many of the Natives and yet they barely talk about this in school.
The Native culture we have here is so rich and interesting, I had a book all about their legends as a kid, I've always found them more enchanting and inspiring then fairy-tales. And yet we still don't learn a thing or two about it in school. How can we teach the history of our country without talking about those who were here before the Europeans settlers in details? All I've learn from school is the very basic on how they lived, what kind of beliefs they had, how we ''civilized'' them, how the relations between the both of us grew and that's it. It isn't nearly enough.
Sadly, I think that event today they don't want to listen. When we look back, the term savages was often used to describe non-European people that lived in ''discovered'' lands. Frankly, after opening a few history book, I think that's it's that many of so-called civilized discoverers that were the true savages in the end. How many cultures did we loose during the course of history because nobody wanted to listen, understand and then forced their beliefs on them? Today there's still people want to ''civilize'' others. Like the very few uncontacted tribes living here and there, the Sentinelese people for example, and again people want to study them and bring them into our modern world, event if Indian government has abandoned the idea of making contact with them because they're clearly not interested. I do think that it'd be great to learn more about them, but if they don't want to we have no right to force them.
It really pains me, because I am a Christian, and yet I am able to respect other people sexuality, beliefs and culture. I'm pretty aware that the Church's history isn't the most glorious one, even today bible bashing idiots that uses the Scriptures at their advantage still exist. I think that, for a lack of better words, it sucks. A lot. Why is it so hard to come to term with the fact, even if someone doesn't believe or like Jesus, or whoever you believe in, it doesn't mean that this person is a bad human being?
When we take the time to think about it, most religions teaches how we should love and be more accepting of others, and yet churches never applied these teachings in history. Anyone that was different were ignorant savages and devil worshippers. And it's sad, because I think that they could have learned so much from others. Again sadly, history teaches us that when we don't understand something, we destroy it in a way or other.
Ahaha, I'm sorry if this is pretty tl;dr, I tend to get passionate about subjects like this! x')

Misinterpreted is a hell of a lot better than "misused." I often hear people saying "DURRR HITLURR TOOK A SYMBOL OF GOOD AND TURNED IT BACKWARDS TO SYMBOLIZE EVIL!" LOL, fuck no. What serious movement would characterize itself as "evil," for one? All it is is a solar symbol - one used in both directions by a hell of a lot more civilizations throughout history than even these two - and the direction that it faced was a reference to the rotation of the sun. And possibly more relevantly it was used as a symbol associated with Thor in Nordic paganism.
It wasn't misused or misinterpreted by national socialists historical or present - it is certainly, however, misinterpreted by butthurt modern kids.

That's not the only meaning it has though. In Buddhism, it signifies the Buddha's heart and footprints and is said to contain his entirety. It's also something you see often at the beginning of Buddhist texts.

Of course. I just mean its use in context of nazism wasn't incorrect, unusual or anything either - it had its own separate history.
Pretty basic symbol really, it was probably 'invented' by about every ancient culture separately at some point.

Yeah, it's not surprising a lot of cultures chose this symbol to represent four paths, four corners, four seasons, etc etc etc. The number four is a pretty common number in cultures too.

Not to mention it's damned close to basic spirals, variations with 3 or 6 and more spokes or arms - fylfot, kolovrat, sunwheel, triskelion..

True. Chiseling curves into stone was a lot harder than people think it is, it was easier to chisel corners so instead of having a circular/curved spiral, you'd end up with a square spiral.

Well, better that they do know rather than use it as a Nazi symbol trying to be edgy. Though I do find a lot of kids these days use the swastika not as a Nazi symbol, but as the opposite, and still try to be edgy. It's becoming a trend here.

So true. Sadly, the holocaust has left a bad impression on this symbol and it's perceived as the nazi sign even when it's really not. Any form of this is taken to offense, very majorly in the US. It's not truth we're after, it's impression.
