During the first couple of days of her interaction with Sága, the black rescue mare, Arndis had noticed the mare got more active when night fell. So she proposed to leave her in the shelter for the evening with access to the outside paddock and see whether the mare would show any interest in that. When Arndis came by after night fell, she found the mare inside, apathetic and lethargic, her Aurorae spots barely glowing. Rushing to her side, Arndis put the bag of treats down next to her and checked the mare for any signs of a medical issue as it didn’t fit with the behaviour she had spotted during the last couple of days.

Baffled by the mare’s slow but positive response to her touch and the lack of a medical issue Arndis got down next to her and tried to figure out what was wrong. Was it the change in surrounding that caused this relapse? Her trail of thought was broken when Sága stretched her neck towards the bag of treats next to them, sniffing out the herbal treats Arndis brought with her. Grabbing some of the treats out of the bag, she carefully fed them one after the other to the mare while pondering over the situation. “You scared me, you know…” She checked the mare once again but still, there was nothing that hinted at a medical condition.

“Look at her markings… What do they remind you of? Think about it… it’ll help you in understanding her better… it’s even something you like...”
The words and the slight chuckle of Sol now echoed through her thoughts. It was something the other woman said to her the very first day when they arrived and had a look at the horses. As a volur, she could tell the black sclera of the mare was nothing natural but she refused to tell Arndis what it was all about, wanted her to find out for herself. So she just gave her bits and pieces, hints to point her in the right direction. Aurorae markings were supposed to resemble stars, something Arndis did like as she was a passionate stargazer. But somehow she didn’t think it was that easy. If her seidr was related to the night sky though and her markings were supposed to be a hint…
“Tonight the sky is full of stars but it’s devoid of moonlight… today’s new moon... “
Sága’s head dropped slightly, her eyes closing briefly as in agreement. Arndis ran her hand over the neck of the mare in a gentle caress. If the mare truly was bound to the presence of the moon it explained so much, her lack of energy this night or her need of handling during the day, the stories of her roaming through the forest at night and her spike of activity at the evening and during the night. Feeling herself one step closer to understanding the mare, Arndis made herself comfortable next to the mare. “I’ll keep you company then during this hard time…” Much to her surprise, the mare placed her head in Arndis’ lap, trying to find a comfortable resting position for herself as well while also being able to get some more of those delicious treats that made this miserable night at least somewhat bearable.
