Description So my best friend is turning 18. So I painted something of cosmic proportions for her.

She loves to read, and her intelligence is vast, so I thought I'd paint up something symbolizing a bit of that. I also wanted to shoot for a matching theme that's in the other paintings I've given her over the years. This will be the fifth installment to her great collection of psychedelic BV art.

I love her to pieces, and I love giving her paintings. They make her so happy!

I am so miserable with acrylics. So, I'd love some tips in my critique box, plus I'd love some critiques. God knows I want the next painting for her to be even more breathtaking.

Oh thanks! Hey it's okay, It's nice to get nice comments. I guess the critiques thing is something I feel obligated to partake in.

HAHA! Well, in my opinion, this picture is FAR past needing critiques. More like... it needs an order form attached so people can get a copy. Yeah! That would finish it.

Well, the color paintings are totally inspired by Nikki herself. For the most part, from her, .

Thanks! I'm planning another for graduation, and one for Sarah.

You know, I painted this pretty much the whole night after I got that response from you. I thought about things with a little more positivity, and then this surfaced.

Thanks! I hope she likes. C:

This painting is like the most insane painting i have ever seen be done by a 17 year old. It reminds me of alex greys work in the sense that it portrays the infinite possibilities of the human mind in a sort of different but beutifull dimmension than normal if that makes any sense.

Holy crap, thanks.

Definitely makes sense, and definitely was what I was going for. Precisely the kind of person this piece was meant to represent.

I appreciate the fave and watch, and lovely comment as well.

I won't be 17 for much longer, lol. A few more months until 18.

I wish i could paint like that but i have too shaky of hands to i can only draw some very rough sketches of images i have in my head most of my creative energy is spent writing songs on guitar and lyrics the vibe my songs give off is(in my opinion) quite similiar to paintings that represent factors of life of a spiritual magnitude. i would put songs on this website but im not sure if you can put audio clips on here. so i just post lyrics and photographs

Hey, that's definitely a valid artistic form, and you should embrace it with all your heart. Sounds like you've really got a feel for music, which is great! Unfortunately, DA does not provide for audio artist, i.e. musicians.

You should post in the music section on Youtube, people usually swarm to potentiallly rockin new artists on there from what I've seen. And you can always link to the friends you make here on DA.

Woosh!
Very cool. Cosmic indeed. I'm sure she'll like it :3

The colors get a little too muddy for me in some places, but I do like the flow of this. I'd say experiment with watering down acrylics, or using extenders of various types.. I know there's something to add to make them dry more slowly ect... different options like that.

Is this on canvas? (i see some sort of texture) You could always try to paint on some other surfaces- I found that made a big difference to me- (masonite, illustration board ect)

Then again, you seem to have a better hand at acrylics than me, so I'd say just work at it even more? This picture looks pretty good...

You know, I forgot to mention the whole muddiness thing with some of the colors!

The freaking tree drove me absolutely mad, I had to repaint it twice, and it still looks like I just splatter painted it. >:C There's too many colors in it for my liking. Figure I should just chillax when it comes down to painting intricate things???

The canvas is some weird off-brand thing, it's definitely not the cotton that you usually see me use with the Horn Lake paintings. My friend actually gave it to me for Christmas, lol, I use everything I can get my hands on. I've tried wood here and there, I'd like to branch.

I don't paint a lot as you know, I figure if I keep working at it, I'll get a handle of it.

Thanks so much!

Painting intricate things with acrylic is nigh madness, woman. Don't hurt thyself.

Try masonite if you can, or different sorts of board. Types of bristol and such can even hold up to acrylic o.O;

Do you think our local Crafts place would have that? (Hobby Lobby)

I never use anything other than canvas, :<

hhuuummm maybe... ask for clayboard or masonite, and they might be able to point you to it, or something similar. A larger sort of place ought to have something suitable. Illustration board may be a harder find.

Also, you could always try gessoing wood or somesuch thing :3

Are these materials pricey? God knows I'm as broke of an artist as they get.

annekaretnikov In reply to blackvragor [2009-04-07 04:25:22 +0000 UTC]

mmm.. they can be. If you go small, it shouldn't be too bad. Don't worry- I'm in the same position. Setting up prints and tyring to set up commisions because I miss the taste of fruits and vegetables D:

OH! and they do sell masonite cheaper at places like home depot! You can even get it sized and such :3 Might be a good place to think of getting materials to work on.
