Thank you very much!

My money is on the tank. A depleted uranium or tungsten APFSDS will cut straight through those lightly armored and highly articulated limbs. Mobility kill, retreat, and call in artillery.

I love the muted colors and overgrown buildings. I love the tank's profile and the simple design of the mech, even though I'm more of a fan of western-style walking tanks or inbetweens like the Zaku which is basically a humanoid T-55.

Thank you, and great assessment. Assuming the mech doesn't make a run for it or attempt to flank the tank, it's most likely going to get its limbs blown off.

The tank has to hit first tho. And if that 'rifle' has by any indication the same gun then the playfield seem pretty even here.

Oh this is intense!

So many ideas come off from this, would you mind if I wrote a scene taking inspiration from this?

Why bother? Unless those buildings are bunkers, he can just shoot right through the walls and the mech behind them. Modern tank guns have crazy penetration.

STARCADER In reply to MihoshiK [2019-02-10 00:51:07 +0000 UTC]

you have triggered my curiosity... how much penetration are we talking about?

I mean,Β  it depend on the projectile used, they would need to have chambered the exact slug required for the task, wouldnΒ΄t that be a bit like keatonΒ΄s batmovile?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

MihoshiK In reply to STARCADER [2019-02-10 08:42:45 +0000 UTC]

Modern APFSDS (armor piercing, fin stablilized, discarding sabot) has penetration values in excess of one meter of solid steel.

That's what you'd be using when hunting armor anyway.

STARCADER In reply to MihoshiK [2019-02-10 13:09:43 +0000 UTC]

it could go throughΒ  TWO regular tanks, my god...

Gordon-Weedman In reply to STARCADER [2019-02-10 02:06:41 +0000 UTC]

The M833, a 105 milimeter APFSDS shell, can penetrate up to 400 milimeters of flat steel armour at a range of 4 kilometers, and that's an older shell too. Modern main battle tanks nowadays also generally use a bigger, 120 milimeter gun. I imagine the tank in the image uses a 120 milimeter gun.

Regarding projectiles used, tanks generally carry many types of shells, common ones being HE (High Explosive), HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank), and APFSDS (Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot) but only one kind per type, so while for example there might be many kinds of APFSDS shells in the world, tanks generally won't have different APFSDS shells (or HE, or HEAT, etc.) in their ammo stowage. Seeing as this tank was actively hunting an armoured threat, it will likely have APFSDS shells prepped and loaded.

Also, if you think going through 400 milimeters is impressive, a variant of the Russian Konkurs missile can purportedly go through 1300 milimeters of steel armour. That's over a meter of solid steel!

STARCADER In reply to Gordon-Weedman [2019-02-10 04:17:27 +0000 UTC]

impressive, but I have the belief that it isnΒ΄t the same thing going through a first layer than going through several layers, even if they arenΒ΄t as tough. in my experience everytime a proyectile surpases a layer of ANYΒ  material, it start losing efficiency, due to losing the perfect axis. as it goes through material it keeps going but once it comes out of a first layer, it will tend to get tilted to some extent of an angle, and then as it enters the next layer, it will lose much more energy due to attacking this one layer not perfectly aligned, then could come a third layer and so on, getting worse each time.

I know the brick wall of an average house is like paper for this kind of proyectile but what if they are concrete walls, and then, if they are SEVERAL concrete walls, plus possible brick walls, they may not stop the shell, but reduce quite a nice deal of its initial penetration capabitily (not that I would want to be behind those walls)....

I am no expert like you, but I also have my guesses on this kind of stuff.. I hope I am making sense

(in a nutshel, several layers separated by several meters of air is worse than just one layer, I have seen enough amunition testing footage to know what I am talking about, I just want to discuss the matter, I highly respect your opinion while you seem to know your stuff )

Gordon-Weedman In reply to STARCADER [2019-02-10 14:57:05 +0000 UTC]

To be fair, I'm not super well versed in APFSDS darts, and while you are right that layers seperated by air can cause a projectile to destabilise, I do know that due to their construction, mostly how long they are, APFSDS darts are very longitudinally stable and simply do not turn around like that. So stable in fact that, while they can bounce or ricochet, they are far more likely to simply shatter, which is why you see tanks like the Abrams with such flat slopes on their hull. While I don't think concrete walls will cause it to shatter or turn, it will lose speed, and thus energy, and the tip will certainly not be in pristine condition, though that might depend on what kind of shell it is. As it is intact though, it will still have a lot of energy, which even for a modern tank might still make it a problem.

STARCADER In reply to Gordon-Weedman [2019-02-10 17:29:17 +0000 UTC]

I will simply repeat one of my previous statements, "itΒ΄s not like I would want to be behind any of those walls anyways"

agricola64 In reply to MihoshiK [2019-02-09 21:30:28 +0000 UTC]

that would basically mean that the tasnk commander has guess exctly where the mech is .. (and i doubt the IR can pin it doen through a few house walls)

missing the first shot would give the mech a 15 second window to attack .. or flee ..

so - better close the back door first ..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MihoshiK In reply to agricola64 [2019-02-09 22:39:36 +0000 UTC]

Infrared is going to show you pretty much exactly where the Mech's main heat source is...

And reload time for a modern tank gun is on the order of five to six seconds if you have a reasonably fast loader. Really good loaders can get a new round in the chamber in three seconds, although obviously physical exhaustion means they can't keep up that speed for long.

But can a tank fell the mighty weapon of a sharp kick to the gun barrel?

Also thats a dope mech design.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BlastWaves In reply to Snowy-Aegis [2019-02-11 00:39:36 +0000 UTC]

Depends on how quick the mech is and how much force it can put behind the kick, I think. But the answer is no, probably.

... The awesomeness of this scene, the detailing, the idea behind, the complexity, it all takes away any words I could possibly use to describe it... How long did it take you to make this, and did you create everything from scratch?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BlastWaves In reply to TinkerTanker44432 [2019-02-11 00:05:38 +0000 UTC]

Nearly everything was made from scratch. The mech, scenery, buildings, and tank were all done from the ground up, the only exceptions being the Soviet inspired space poster on the left which was part of a series of posters I never got around to finishing, and the small debris piles near the tank were already made prior to the scene. It took about a full week of work on and off to create it.
