Description
The merrows or “fish folk” are the second most common of all aquatic races to be found in Urth, and current estimates support them as the most populous of them all, their numbers outnumbering their neighbours several times over in every ocean, river and lake in the world. Displaying an incredible array of shapes, sizes and colours, unifying traits include their anthropomorphic shape (as opposed to the unrelated merfolk), skin covered in minute scales, and the presence of gills surrounding the head and/or neck area.

Unlike the merfolk, merrows are gregarious and build permanent settlements, sometimes carved out of rock, coral or shell, sometimes cobbled together from surface scraps. Large stretches of sediment are chosen as communal nurseries where the inhabitants will lay hundreds of amassed eggs beneath cultivated gardens of algae. Younglings are looked after with minimal effort, and most of them will be picked off by predators before they’re able to reach maturity, but to the merrows this is all a fact of life; in a world where danger hides behind every shadow, only those with the right strength and caution can endure and keep the species alive. Elders are thus highly respected within their communities, providing advice born from years of hardships and struggle.

Merrows tend to be shy and wary towards other races, especially when it comes to merfolk, but in many parts of the world they have begun patching up relationships with them after a rather shaky history together. Their inability to breathe outside water has seen them rarely interacting with the surface world unless clad in special gear, although some among their kind are known to exhibit amphibious traits.
