Description 3148 YatO - End of the Tashrany Dynasty

Incidentally, the descendants of Hermil Tashrany ruled as kings over Hannai until a palace revolution in 3148 YatO.

3220 YatO - Present Time

I talk about the 'present' several times in the forgoing chapters. This raises the question: What is the present?

For a historian, of course, there is a fundamental approach: usually, for the viewer, the present is the result of historical events, something like the sum of the whole, from his point of view. There is a new sum for the next generation.

In this particular case, by 'present' I mean, of course, the time in which 'The White Hawk' and 'The Winged Serpent' take place. The present, when trade with the south, with Ma'ouwat, is flourishing - and therefore the caravan routes are even more insecure than they ever were before; in which the Taribian cities have been doing their own thing for 500 years, after being part of the Taribian Empire administered from Berresh for almost 200 years; in which they look for alliances against the conquering city of Hannai - or rather its king, who is not in an easy position domestically and therefore keeps his subjects busy waging war; in which the influence of the 'East', the Awrani, is questionable for some and completely normal for others - and was not an issue at all 500 years ago because the Awranian cities had also belonged to the Taribian Empire since their conquest by the Tarib; in which the city of Berresh (the Constantinople or Byzantium of my world) with its west-east or east-west mixed culture works to achieve religious supremacy in the Oikumene via the Taribian Road with monotheism; in which the fame of faded Taribian war philosophers has been preserved for 500 years, and most of the people have not seen a person with an obviously unearthly heritage for just as long.

After 500 years, the roads of the fallen empire still exist, the border stones, the common language, the common metres and the common currency: people weigh and pay in Tar or its fractions in all places north of Ma'ouwat. You can get tea in the east and oinos in the west, and an educational stay in Berresh is a must for the emerging Awranian leadership elite. But in Hannai, most of the ruling Taribian elite have more or less open problems with a king whose family comes from Berresh. The culture of the Taribian tribes is still maintained in the west, but these tribes actually no longer exist - only a handful of unbending are too stubborn to leave the barren highlands south of the prosperous Taribian cities. And if these unbending would not all be armed to the teeth, it would certainly be the next excursion destination that the nostalgic Awranian educators tried to make appealing to their protΓ©gΓ©s.
