Description Berresh

The city of Berresh (probably a corruption of 'bar Barbesh' 'over the Barbesh') is the youngest of the northern cities presented here, founded by Hermil Tashrany in 2555 YatO at the mouth of the Barbesh, which comes from the Gray Mountains. Located directly on the cliffs on the Circle Sea, the city had a harbour from the very beginning, which is particularly frequented by Awrani and Sa'atik. The fortification of this port in the estuary bay of the Barbesh, an iron chain that separates the entire harbour basin from the Circle Sea, is considered one of the wonders of the Oikumene.

The city, which lays between the territories of the Awrani and the Tarib, served at its beginning primarily to administer Hermil Tashrany's territory, and grew very quickly. Before the first, innermost city wall around the higher parts near the harbour - the later Upper City - was completed, the already existing temple complex in honour of the Unnamed - a local deity whose worship is influenced by Awranian ideas - on the highest elevation near the mouth of the Barbesh, was surrounded by dwellings and had to be integrated. So this temple and the huge sacrificial bowl from stone in front of it, in which entire tree trunks are burned day and night in honour of the god, became the symbol of the city.

During Hermil Tashrany's lifetime, the rapidly expanding, village-like structures in front of the city wall and the entire harbour complex were added to the actual city area and surrounded with a second wall, the so-called 'New Wall'. The first city wall thus became the 'Old Wall'. Due to the further growth of various suburbs, especially in the north along the Barbesh and in the east along the Taribian Road towards Hannai, some of which have also been provided with walls, Berresh offers the image of a triple-walled mountain from a distance.

The city is governed by a council made up of representatives from the five districts elected by the nobility, and the high priest of the Temple of the Unnamed, who officially only acts in an advisory capacity. Berresh is above all a trading city, which therefore maintains diplomatic relations with all cities and peoples whose friendship has a favourable influence on trade. Many of the traders living in Berresh are active in long-distance trade with Awrani and Sa'atik and supply all the Tarib with the goods of these peoples.

The location of the city, between the Tarib and the Awrani, has given rise to a mixed west-eastern culture from the very beginning, which the nobility of Berresh, mostly coming from Tarib families, cultivates.

The German text I wrote in 2023 for my website, the English version of the text was made by me in 2024 with help of the Google Translator (for enhanced vocabulary) and 'Language Tool' (to check spelling).

The graphic I drew in 2023 with a ball pen, it should show Berresh, with tree fortification walls and with the temple of the Unnamed on top of its highest elevation, as it might be depicted on a coin. Then I scanned the drawing and edited it moderately in GIMP, e.g. put a neat circle around.
