Description
PLEASE READ:Hi everyone! This is a update of the previous Blender Blog, now with audio! Rather than creating this post to show off my art however, this post is dedicated to teaching and helping others with the basics and more complex components of Blender. If you have any questions or problems with blender, post them below in the comments (state which engine Blender Render, Blender Cycles, Blender Game). I will attempt to answer them if possible. I am still learning Blender, but have gained much experience over the past year. I look forward to learning more and helping you with your future blendevors! If you are a Blender Expert, please feel free to answer as many questions in the below comments as you can, your help is greatly appreciated!
Some of my previous conversations have links in the comments below for the benefit of others.
This is my way of creating a group. Most of the groups for blender are more interested in collecting, displaying and selling artwork than instructing novices. If you like this idea or are interested in this blog, either as a Blender Master, Blender Intermediate, or Beginner, please let me know by "watching" or "faving" this post.
Never used blender before?? Interested in animation??

PROBLEM: INVISIBLE MATERIALS IN RENDERED VIEW, MMD -> BLENDER
Some textures may fail to properly convert to blender materials, causing them to become a transparent material with failed textures. This can be fixed but is a bit tedious. You will have to go to the textures folder for you mmd model, usually inside the same folder as the pmd/pmx, and figure out which ones go on which part of the model and then import the ones that are missing manually.
1) Separate the model by material using the mmd_tools add-on.
2) In solid view, select one of the parts of the mesh which disappear in rendered view.
3) Go to the materials panel, the preview should show that the material is completely transparent.
4)Next move to the Textures panel. The textures probably failed to import and will appear black. We will manually import them.
5)Select one of the textures and click "Open" in the image section.
6) Navigate to the folder containing the textures for your mmd model.
7) Select one of the textures which is appropriate for the part of the model you selected in step 2.
8) Repeat for all textures for the material if there are more than one, you can usually use the same texture file
9) You should now be able to see this part of the model in rendered view!
Repeat steps for all invisible parts of the model.
Let me know if this helps or if you need clarification or additional assistance. Best of luck in your Blendevors!

I'm trying to think of all my newbie questions from Last night :-D...
Ok... I figured out how to change the font of a text object, yay ... and I figured out how to get special characters (like common symbols) into text (though knowing how to imbed any unicode character might be something useful to know for down the road)... So what remains?
- Anyone know how to rotate an object to specific angles? For example, when you create a new text object, they are always laying flat on there back. Is there a way to precisely rotate this 90 degrees upward "precisely" as opposed to just kind of doing this by hand (with the rotate tool) and hoping you got the angle right?
- Similar to the above, sometimes is necessary to put text (or a label) onto another surface. Is there an automatic way to get this second object "as close as possible" to the object you are adding this onto "without going through" the other object? (In other words to get the optimal distance to where the object doesn't disappear, but to where you do not get "a shadow"?)
- I am assuming there must be a feature in Blender to put one object overtop of another and "subtract" one from the other (For example, you take the initial cube, and drag a sphere ontop of part of her and then "delete" the space occupied by the sphere from the cube, leaving a round "indentation" in the cube). What is this feature called in Blender (so I can find this more easily)?
- If I want to put a circle or square around something... like I'm trying to simulate buttons on a GUI or something... how do I? I'm sure I'll figure this out. This is pretty basic stuff... I just need to learn the terminology in the Blender UI I guess...

Question1: Press R on your keyboard to rotate, X,Y,Z to select an axis, followed by the number of degrees.
Question2: you can use values similarly t question 1 in translation G to grab/translate, X,Y,Z for axis and then a value. Or press N and adjust z value under location.
Question3:A Boolean modifier allows you to subtract one mesh from another.
Question4: Press SPACE, type "snap 3d cursor to selected" then add the plane or circle.
SPACE can help you search the blender commands. Hope this helps.

Here's another newb question.... I know about the 1, 3, and 7 keypad keys to show stuff from different angles, but is there a way to see "the back", "the left", and "the bottom" of what you're working on with one convenient press? (or even two I'm cool with) I'm assuming since they didn't mention this that maybe there's a "go 180 degrees" key?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
blenderenderer In reply to blenderenderer [2015-08-17 14:51:13 +0000 UTC]
Close. The "Go 180 degrees key" is done by holding down "Ctrl + 1,3, or 7" for "front, right, top". Normally its the other way around, 1=front, Ctrl+1=back, but maybe you have different settings than me. If you have any more questions contact me at Blender Blog [Tutorial/ Interactive Help/Forum] . I'm still new, but would love to help you with your future blendevors. Sorry for the late response, just answering questions regardless of when they're posted.

Hi, just wondering does anyone else here use blender to make 3D games? If so, how do you configure the game so that by moving the mouse, the direction of the camera also moves? I've looked on the internet and done some scripting but all that has happened has vexed me in the most maleficent way! If anyone has also tried tackling this problem with a reasonable amount of fervor, then a comprehensive response would be most welcome.

Hey, if you're having trouble modeling, you can skip that and go straight to animating, and if you need anything, I can help you at my Blender Blog [Tutorial/ Interactive Help/Forum] . Here's what I recommend to start having fun animating immediately in Blender, without modeling, you can learn that over time with the assistance of books and video tutorials (a really good book is Learning Blender: A Hands-On Guide to Creating 3D Animated Characters by Oliver Villar). Anyways:
1) Download a model, for some really cool looking models check out MMD models, there are many available for free download, of course follow the copyright rules se by the creator of the model. (Just search MMD models DL on or Google)
2) Use this You Tube tutorial to Install the MMD Tools addon in Blender, and import the model (the link to the addon is in the description of the video): [MMD in Blender] MMD to Blender 3D (Tutorial)
3) Pose and animate the model! Check out my tips in the comments of the above tutorial, and contact me with any problems.
Oh, and if you want to move the model off-origin, use the tip in the comments section of this tutorial (in my conversation with RoDizzy):MMD on Blender~
Best of Luck! I can't wait to see what you create.

thanks for answering my previous question i have a new one now..... can you rig a models skeleton and stuff and export it from blender as a pmx file? like right now i'm worried that because the only pmx editor that is working on my computer is the japanese version and so im worried that i won't be able to rig my model once im done sculpting him. that and do you know of any pmx editor tutorials, like that would show you how to rig your model. imm also confused about how to rig the eyes, i know they have a pocket and like the pocket is supposed to close? is that right?

blenderenderer In reply to blenderenderer [2015-08-17 14:44:02 +0000 UTC]
Yes you can export the model as a pmx using an addon. I use Sugiany's blender_mmd_tools. Here is a video showing how to set this addon up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGRLc5… There's a link to the addon in the description of the video. If you have trouble finding the addons folder, run a search for it. Don't forget to unzip the file and just transfer the mmd_tools folder to the addons folder in Blender. Once you have activated the addon under User Preferences, you can export the model by:
1)selecting the model
2) going to the "MMD Tools" tab (far left)
3)scroll down to "Export Model" under the "MMD Model Tools" (near the bottom)
I haven't actually tried this as I do my rigging/animation in Blender, see if it works and let me know.
As for the eyes, they are usually created by making holes in the face mesh and placing the eyeballs behind it. You can rig them with two bones, one for each eye, and connect those bones to various control bones as necessary. Or just create 2 sliders that open and close each eye, another that moves the eye right/left and another that moves it up/down. combining those sliders you can make the model look in any direction and open close, blink, wink etc. this can also be done in Blender using Shape Keys.
Here's a video I found on creating a Wink facial slider in PMD Editor, I'll see if I can find one for PMX but since they're similar check this one out for now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=93XjuP…
Heres one for mouth movements in PMX Editor, just do a similar thing with the eyes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsuKpJ…
And here's another for basic rigging. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CcASe…
Let me know if this helps, or if you encounter any other problems!

A similar method can be used to move MMD to other programs. Once you have the model in Blender, export it as an obj or other file supported by the program you are trying to import it to.
