December 14,2010Public version 3.1a
-Added ability to enable/disable the start tips with regfiles.
-When using Visa, it would still try and apply userframes and start tips. (I missed this one in 3.1)
These are the only two changes in 3.1a. If 3.1 worked for you, then you should NOT install this. Well you can if you want but there is no new features.
I also included StartOrbz 2.1, since this loaded up fine for most people.
There really isnt much more to do with StartOrbz, so only expect bug fixes. If you have suggestions, please let me know. As always, post any bugs, comments, or suggestions.

Are you running x86 or x64?
Are you using a language pack, and if so which one?
Did a previous version of StartOrbz load fine? If you know which version, please post that as well.
Please let me know so I can fix this issue. I think I got it nailed (start tips), but once you guys respond I can narrow in on it.

Every time I want to make a new start Icon, I have to redownload StartOrbz. Is there a way to save it on my comp so I dont have to redownload everytime?

What exactly happens after you retry to make a new orb, does the window show up? I need more info. I never heard of this issue.

Im thinking about abandoning support for vista. Its an older os and I dont even have it installed anymore. Its impossible to test anything.
I might release one more build and then kill it. Of course I would still make available the last official vista build, but that would be it. No more updating it.
Any thoughts?

I was really excited about this, but now my pc is stuck in the classic view and theres no way for me to fix it and yes I have tried almost everything possible to fix it. So creator if you know how could you possibly tell me how to solve this pesky problem? Cuz it royaly screwed my PC

StartOrbz only mods explorer.exe and explorer.exe.mui. Those does not control your themes.
All I can think of is that you also made some other mods that day as well that your not recalling.
Basicly, StartOrbz stops explorer, makes the mods to it, and then restart explorer. Nothing else.
If you let StartOrbz create a restore point for you when you first ran it, then restore from that point.
You can always do the "sfc /scannow" commmand to resore all your system files.
Did you make anychanges to your aero themes that day?
I would say to restore your orb, but im 100% positive that StartOrbz did not cause your issue.

I did run sfc /scannow and it stops at 92% and says the process cannot be completed. I dont know whats going on but i just dont think this program is compatibale with my version of Vista.

did you use the uxtheme patcher program? In order to get the orbs to work, you need uxthemes.dll to be patched. Did you also try to restore your orb using the restore feature within startorbz? That will restore your msstyle.
It sounds like you didnt have uxthemes patched and startorbz modified the themefile. Since it wasnt patched, the msstyle is now invalid.
Run uxthemes patcher and restart your pc.

when I open startirbz it says vista detected and when i click ok the program crashes on me. I dont know if its my operating system or what but I know im stuck with this classic theme and its like it wiped the vista and aero themes off my computer.

I take that back. On Vista systems it does modify the themefile to change the orb. Thats where the orb is located.
Are you using vista?
If so, use the sfc /scannow command. That will undo any mods you made.

how are you trying to load orbs? Are they orbs created with my software (.png) or are you trying to load .bmp orbs that you downloaded off the web?

are you talking about when you create a new orb from scratch?

I sent out a few test copies last week to people who said they would report back if my new "bug fix" fixed the loading issue or not. Not one person got back to me.
I need to update a few things and will release the new update on monday.

It might be the new start tip feature. Im not sure. The next build will allow you to turn it off. I hope that fixes the issue most of you have.

But your not telling me how you made those orbs. Is one orb made with 2.1 and the other with 3.1, are you importing a small orb? when you import a smallorb it gets inlarged and thus you lose quality. Give me something to work with.
The startorbz standard is to create the biggest size orb used by windows and THEN shrkink it.
I did make a change in 3.1 and how it no longer "stretches" images to fit, instead it shrinks without losing the aspect ratio. Thats was in the read me.txt.
Just asking me to look at a picture and then telling me their is a differance WITHOUT telling me how you created them will not help me help you.
Maybe point me to the picture you used to create the orb so I can compare the quality.
Also, I dont go the the S.O. page on sevenforums anymore, so if you have problems, come here and post your issue. I will NEVER see it at sevenforums.

If you load a small image into the orb sets it will enlarge them. Best to use larger images as it looks better when you shrink to fit rather than enlarge to fit.

Hi, I've been trying to get this program running for the last 2 days without success, it simply crashes at startup (Windows 7 x64). I've done the usual ownership taking of both explorer.exe and explorer.exe.mui, without success and I even tried it on a clean virtual Windows 7 (x64 again) install, basically the same thing, except that I've been able to obtain this:

Only thing that could explain such thing is that the OS is in french (as you can see) and as such, explorer.exe.mui is in fr-fr folder, not en-en, but I doubt it does mean anything.

It checks for the language and uses the appropriate mui. Well it should.
So you ran it on a virtual setup with no orbs and it still crashed. wow.

I looked. I think the new start tip feature isnt 100%. I now recall I never fully tested this on other machines. Its messy code too.
Never the less the next build will allow the user to skip/disable the start tips feature. I will include a reg file to allow this since the user might never be able to get startorbz loaded to even get to the settings page.
I believe this is causing a lot of people trouble.

Blizo, i too am having problems with the new version. I just updated from 2.1 to 3 (and my goddamn restore point from earlier today doesn't contain it, so i can't put back the previous version, wtf?) and when i start the process, i see it appearing on my taskbar. When i put the mouse over it, i get the aero preview and can clearly see the window it generates. Yet for some reason, i can't get that window to come to the foreground. Neither through a process of minimising other windows, nor via the taskmanager nor via right-click stuff. I just can't get into the window while it's clearly there... I'm running win7 home premium x86, admin account and everything... Compatibility mode, as usual, didn't do **** to fix it
