Description Working on some AU stuff with CastASpellLiana , Persephone-is-perf  and ChickenDoodleS0up , and we were coming up with different attributes that the three main races: Earth Ponies, Pegasi and Unicorns- could have. I liked these ideas so much, I figured it would be fun to whip up fully fledged headcanons! (And I had to use my children because why not.) There is quite a bit to unpack here, so see you at the bottom!

Earth ponies

Unlike pastel unicorns or vibrant pegasi, earth ponies usually come in “earthy” colors and tones, like greens, browns, greys and blues-though there are exceptions, of course. However, they have the widest variety in eye colors, ranging from smokey grey to flashy neon green. This allows them to both blend in with their surroundings and ward off potential predators with a sharp glare from bright, piercing gazes.

Earth ponies have very thick, double layered coats, helping to protect their skin from sunburn and cold temperatures. They also have a natural shift from light to dark fur along their stomachs and the bottom of their legs or vice versa due to their backs and heads being exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. Because new fur is constantly growing out, these big boys and girls shed...a lot. The first few sheds for fluffy earth pony foals can become traumatic for non-earth pony parents because huge clumps of fur just fall out, leaving their babu looking more like a patched teddy bear than a fuzzy horse for at least two to three days.

Along with thick coats, earth ponies also have fluffy ears and fetlocks to help with blocking out dirt, debris and keeping away any hungry biting bugs. This also means that bath time is very extensive, most times lasting up to an hour to make sure every lock is properly cleaned. A nap by a heater or fire or in a sunny patch of grass is usually the best way for them to dry out. Good thing most of them are fond of water.

Earth ponies tend to have a weak spot: their fluffy tummies. Even the toughest, most crass of earth ponies will roll over like a playful puppy for a good belly rub. The reason why is because their fur is the thinnest along their stomachs, where the least sunlight hits. With the right amount of pressure, they can be put to sleep from a relaxing tummy massage, something that their partners use to their advantage.

Like preening is to pegasi, earth ponies are very fond of their grooming time, which ranges from affectionate nuzzles and licks to a thorough coat brushing session. Younger pairs tend to greet each other with a lick to the cheek, and some older couples even have rooms in their homes dedicated for the act, decked with fake turf and combs and brushes hanging on the walls. It's something that they take pretty seriously.

While it is a common trait for Earth ponies to be strong and have some sort of relation to the earth or agriculture, some just...don't fit the mold. In very rare cases, runts of litters can develop malabsorption syndrome, where they don't get enough nutrients from food and end up being skinny and unable to lift much weight. Most survive, but are limited in what they can do, usually serving in community service and other odd, less physically taxing jobs.

Pegasi

Pegasi come in every color of the rainbow, and are the most vibrant of the three main races when it comes to their coat color. This makes it easy to spot them from far away, and to startle threats by becoming a blur of color when they come zooming towards them at high speeds. Pegasi can also have bands and markings along their wings, and expandable tail feathers to help with steering and control in the air.

Pegasi are very feathery, usually having feathers everywhere where fur doesn't grow, especially at the bottom of their legs. The large amount of plumage keeps them aerodynamic and lessens the strain on their wings from their body weight during flight as well as giving additional body heat for chilly months. Not to mention being good to cuddle against.

Though they are usually known for the occasional startled squawk and ruffling of feathers, pegasi make a variety of sounds when communicating with each other, ranging from playful chirps, chitters and coos (and of course, songs) to full on guttural booms and sharp alarm calls. Some even quack and honk, but it's quite rare.

While some pegasi entertain potential future partners with flashy, complicated aerial dances, most show their affection in a different way: through clouds. Depending on the length of the relationship, different clouds mean different things: rain clouds showing how long they have been holding in their emotions to confess their feelings, long, stringy clouds meaning how far their love for their significant other stretches, and rainbows to signify their sheer excitement to confess their love and admiration, not caring if everyone in the world can see it. While other pegasi can read the messages and find it sweet and endearing, unicorns and earth ponies… are very confused.

Along with cloud writing, birb pones also bring gifts to their lovers, but not the traditional flowers and chocolates. Instead, they bring whatever they find to be used to make an ‘affection nest’: loose feathers, hay, moss, anything soft to make things comfy. Whenever two(or more) pegasi get married, they usually spend their first night together in the nest, as is tradition to bring good health-both in the couple and future offspring.

Despite their cuddly appearance, pegasi are actually the most aggressive in terms of play fighting. While the other races settle for light nips, kicks and headbutts, wing horses go all at it. With feathers flying and loud screeches filling the air, it looks more like a fight to the death than a game of tag.

Pegasus wings are rather sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, especially when it comes to storms, as their primary feathers act as sensors to pick up electrical currents in the air hours before the rain clouds are rolled in. Sometimes they manage to capture enough currents to produce either a small spark or a full on electric ring, though it's best to stay clear when that happens, unless someone wants to turn into a fuzzy puffball.

Unicorns

Unicorns have more pastel pallets compared to the other races, donning softer, muted coat colors as opposed to more eye catching ones. They also have the highest likelihood for obtaining fur markings, from elegant dappled coats to large spots and splotches. An annual competition is held in Canterlot for which unicorn has the best coat in the region, and things can get pretty heated.

Out of the three races, unicorns also have the smallest ears, mainly to make more head room for their horns. Baby horn pones are often born bald-headed  with big, floppy ears that become smaller until the foal is one month of age, where the horn has fully formed and is beginning to jutt out of the head. This usually results in them not having as sharp a sense of hearing, and soon leads to most purebreds having to wear hearing aids starting from their early teens. So don't consider it rude if a unicorn asks someone to speak up or repeat themselves, it's just something that they live with in order to use magic.

Some unicorns are blessed with the “Mark of the Diamond”, a special mark that appears around the horn to signify that said unicorn has a strong sense in magic. Betting matches typically ensue among proud to be parents to see which-if any- of their future children will be given the mark. Those with marks are held with high respect and are often looked up to as leaders, regardless of their personality.

Unicorns typically inherit the trademark long, lion like tail and cloven hooves from their ancestors, the monoceros. Throughout the generations, the shape and style of said attributes have shifted, but the basic elements have stayed the same. Once in a blue moon, a unicorn is born as a “classic”: all white with brightly colored eyes. Their family members are very proud.

Out of the three races, unicorns have the smallest body builds. Though they can be tall and muscular, even the biggest unicorn doesn't hold a candle to an earth pony's stature. Despite this, they hold the highest agility and speed of the land races, lean bodies coupled with long legs allowing for quick turns and effortless leaps. Just be prepared for angry blasts of magic from one that's charging after another for eating their cookies.

Like earth ponies, unicorns also are capable of growing out fetlocks, but they don't serve the same purpose. While one is used as a form of protection, unicorn fetlocks are long and flowing, being considered as a fashion statement. They are enchanted with a spell to prevent dirt, twigs or other debris from getting tangled into them, and usually add an extra half hour to any self care savvy unicorn's grooming regime. Some say that the fetlocks are remnants of older generations, while others think that unicorns are just lazy when it comes to trimming them.

A common pastime among young unicorns-mainly energetic colts- is a little thing called horn jousting. Think of a sword fight...only with horns. The one who can knock the other over by the horn is the declared victor, and special foam sleeves are used to avoid potential injuries. Older unicorns do it as well, but it's usually reserved for a pair who haven't seen each other in a long time.

Like pegasi, unicorns also have the ability to conduct electricity, but in a different manner. Instead of picking up currents, they can channel them directly through their horn. This can be both a good and bad thing: good because it helps to make them look more menacing in certain situations, and bad because they sometimes can't control the surges and they are released in bursts of energy. The bursts are usually harmless, but cause a weird tingling sensation through their bodies and leaves them a bit disoriented afterwards.

Did you make it all the way through my sleep deprived blurbs? Congrats! Have some sushi  . I enjoyed working on this though, and may do some of the other races in the future! Thanks for reading!
