does the (C) mean copyright or created by? because if it's copyright then nowadays Kermit would be (C) Disney!!! it's so weird to say that. i'm trying not feel like that's a bad thing and just recognize it as a business thing. but it's hard for me to actively see it as a good thing...

yes, the (C) does mean copyright and yeah, technically all the muppets are owned by disney now which is still weird for me to wrap my head around too, but i think they still should belong to their original creator.
