Description Even when she is engrossed in pony dress designing process, Rarity doesn't mind it when her sister visits her room. It can be very uplifting for her to take a little break with such a playful soul around, eager to be wrapped up in the older Unicorn.

The drawing is based on one of the sketches (Sketch #2 - Sisters ) by the talented artist SkyBoundDeos - I really recommend you to visit his page and look at his amazing works.

The idea how to complete this scene came from the cloudy memories from my childhood. My siblings and I would sometimes have fun disturbing our parents at their work - especially our mother, who worked at home and looked after us the whole time. The cloudy part concerns her sewing work, I remember that we used sewing tools like buttons and ribbons as toys. If I'm correct, when she had to use a very big piece of fabric, she had to lay it down on the floor to draw cutting lines.
From all the ideas that came to my mind, I have decided that such setting would be the best choice for coloring Fashionista Rarity.

________
Art by me.
The initial idea belongs to  SkyBoundDeos - thank you for letting me use one of your great sketches.
A big thanks to AstralCasualty for valuable support in this work.

I love how much you've been improving of late. In this one it's the characters' similarity (although Sweetie seems to have been eating the crayons) and their sisterly connection despite age difference and differences of character.

All those objects must have taken forever.

Oddly satisfying thing: the pink translucency to Rarity's hooves, the one nearest the viewer in particular. Lovely feel of material realism there, contrasting nicely with the soft rug and the fluffyness around her ankles.

Thank you, but some kudos also goes to SkyBoundDeos , the author of the initial sketch.

You're right, I probably spent more time on background than on the characters.
I wanted to give a soft look to the hooves not only to make them more pleasant but also to justify pony ability to bend them to grab things.

It simply astounds me how you turned nothing into something, how you transformed one of my rough, unpolished (and rather unimpressive to me) sketches into a beautiful scene such as this.  All the little details you've added, especially your extensive efforts put towards the background, adds that much more charm and the entire project as a whole deserve nothing but the highest compliments.  And, from what I've seen of the comments, I'm not alone in that mindset.  Fantastic job with this one!  It may have taken a while, but good things come to those that wait and this was definitely worth such a wait.

Now, as far as objectivity is concerned, I do have a few critiques that I hope you don't mind me sharing, which are rather minor on the verge of possible nit-picking.  The first one that comes to mind is that Rarity's ear seems a tad too small.  Perhaps this extends to my style influencing my perceptions on this point, but it is just something that I noticed and wished to point out.

I also feel that the shadows coming from Rarity's and Sweetie Belle's bodies could be slightly darker, if only where the contour line of the body and the shadow touch and fade off slightly from there.  I just feel that it would make them feel a bit more grounded and make the shadows more present but not overbearing either.

Lastly, you're far too kind by calling me talented or anything of the sort XD  But I do appreciate the compliment nonetheless.

Really though, you did an amazing job with this one and you deserve every ounce of praise you receive for this.  Amazing job, Blue.

I'm so happy that you like my drawing. It means a lot to me.

There is no need to add more but a discussion about art always may be valuable.

My choice of decreasing Rarity's and Sweetie Belle ears came from studying horse anatomy. I've noticed that i.a. they don't have so big ears, so I adjusted their head proportions. The result didn't look bad for me so I decided to keep those edits.

I was trying to not make the shadows too dark to emphasize that the room is filled by light. But of course I may be wrong because there is still a lot to learn for me in this matter. And your words proves that because if I understand you well, you mean that shadow fading curve should be different to look more natural, do you?

Anyway, I myself would be much more critical reviewing my drawing - I see here a lot of things that could be done better. I also realized that I still forgot to make some last subtle edits.

Finally, I know what I am talking about - you really are a talented artist. Your sketches are far superior than mine in every matter. You just don't have so much practise with coloring like me, so you very rarely show us your wonderfull art in more advanced stage.

SkyBoundDeos In reply to blueSpaceling [2015-04-06 04:17:35 +0000 UTC]

Of course! ^^  It turned out so nicely and it's quite obvious that you put a lot of time and effort into this, how could I not love it?

Yes, I assumed you choice to change the ear size was to lean more towards realism of actual horse anatomy.  Do not misunderstand, I don't find any fault in that decision but rather more of a contrast between the sketch and your finished product.  It still looks quite good and I'm always happy to see some sort of experimentation based on knowledge that you have.

From my experience, intensity of the light source as well as how many light sources are present  can greatly affect how shadows apprear.  In this one, I do feel that you could probably darken up the shadows slightly for Rarity and Sweetie Belle, as they do seem rather light when compared to how dark they are with the rolls of fabric above them.  However, the best way to see what works is to just experiement, though I doubt I have to mention such thing to you ^^  There is a lot that I till have to study on this subject as well, so I may not be the ideal person to be handing out criticisms here but I still wanted to share my thoughts nonetheless.

Ah, I can understand that completely, as I am always far more critical on my work than anyone else that I show.  No matter how well I think I did on a piece, there will always be something nagging me, telling me that I could have done something better.  But that is the joy of art and drawing, to push yourself further and to learn more with every drawing that you create.

And no matter what you may say, I still say that you're far too kind.  Yes, I'm incredibily stubborn in that respect, but I still want to thank you for the kind compliment ^^  You are right, that I need far more practicing with my coloring skills and applying what I have learned in the subject.  Really need to start pushing myself there, and maybe, just maybe, I'll be more accepting to such praise ^^  Maybe.  Still, I wouldn't sell yourself short either.  Though you say that my sketches are superior, it's the end results that really matter and you have me outclassed in every way there.  You are quite the skilled artist yourself, so don't you forget that either.

My pleasure. True.

Except one single thing. They look more like miniature horses than ponies.

I mean proportions wise and the anatomy, they are closer to miniatures than ponies with their short legs and big belly.
