Description
Lately people have been wondering on how I make VN sprites for my game, so I decided to make my very first tutorial based on it.Please note that this tutorial method is a purely self-taught method that I found by myself. So I can't ensure if this is a right way to do it.
I just hope that some of you will find this useful
That would make me feel really happy
Just ask if you have any question ^^
Oh and also please give me some critique on how well did I write this tutorial, pretty please? (;w

Well-written tutorial! Never having actually seen any tutorial to make VN Sprites, I am very impressed.
It covers the basics easily, easy to follow and the layout is pleasant to look at.
Although, I do think you need to cover more ground after the drawing process. For example, how you'd make it transparent (SAI has an option with that), cutting it halfway to fit the visual novel, the resolution and etc..
You might maybe perhaps want to make a continuing tutorial, maybe for placing in the sprites in the visual novel.
Either way, your tutorial turned out fantastic! It was actually fun to read.

Thank you for the critique!
Well to be honest, about the resolutions and transparency you mentioned, I just don't know how to explain the aftermath
This sprite resolution is 1330x3510 and I have to go through VERY unorthodox way in order to make them fit to the game.
...You can actually make SAI transparent?

You're welcome! It's fine if you can't really explain
When you save a file in SAI as a .png, a save option window pops up and says [ 24bpp RGB/ 32bpp ARGB (each pixel have opacity)]. The 32bpp option actually lets you save the art file in transparent and not in white background! You then don't have to magic wand your sprite in another program. Hope that made sense :\

*gasp* T-That's actually very useful! I always go the roundabout way by saving it in .psd file first and then saving it as transparent using Photoshop.

Oooooh, this is great!
I was wondering if it would work just as well if I happen to draw my sprites on paper and then colored them on a computer?

I only made tutorial for layer organizing, not drawing the lineart. Sorry, but I couldn't help you.

If you do this in sai when you put it in to Ren'Py wont the background still be there

then save it as .psd file and open it in Photoshop instead. Easy.

I think this is a really good tutorial to show people how to make a VN sprite! The visual and explanation is pretty good, and even if I'm not making one I enjoyed taking a look! So, good job!

Well I'm pretty shitty at making anatomies, but I will say that if he was real and half-naked XD
Thanks!

It's fine, I'm pretty bad at drawing anatomy too xD It just takes some practice.
Besides you already have most of the lines down, a little placement-correcting would make it better

Thank you so much for making this tutorial! It`s really going to help me with my own VN sprites.
Question: How do you make the other ones with different clothes and expressions?

Huh? It's the same thing. Read the tutorial again carefully.

SAMSXCS In reply to BlueStorm-Studio [2013-12-23 12:52:15 +0000 UTC]
So you`re saying that you did all the different things and stuff just by using one single pic?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BlueStorm-Studio In reply to SAMSXCS [2013-12-23 12:59:39 +0000 UTC]
Yes. Or to be more exact, by using just one single .psd or .sai file.

Okay. One more question: Did you draw the trousers pattern?

Of course not, I use patterns.

SAMSXCS In reply to BlueStorm-Studio [2013-12-24 13:07:49 +0000 UTC]
How? Do you download like a pack, like brushes, or do you download them and put them in the drawing?

BlueStorm-Studio In reply to SAMSXCS [2013-12-24 13:19:35 +0000 UTC]
It's called Pattern Stamp Tool, it's available in any version of Photoshop.
I don't really know how to explain it so try to google it for better tutorial
