Voodoo dolls came to my mind to make this.
Coraline had something to do with this, and also some other rather gruesome stuff.

The whole point is if you're living way out in the Australian wilderness with nowhere else to turn toΒ and if your child was having that sort of disease, would you be scared?

Allright you are overthinking this way too much, but for my opinion on the subject:
Having a disease in the middle of the australian wilderness with no means to turn to is something serious, having it to happen to some person in your family and rush it to the nearest medical center should make you scared enough because we are talking about a real person (key word here: real).
Then again it is a cartoon we are talking about, the main character being sick is just to build up some tension, having the van and then the golf cart unable to be used is just a diabolus ex machina to build up even more tension, and then, the reveal of an aircraft to top it all in the climax.
At the end of the episode she was going to be just fine.
Now, I can not grasp your logic. You are comparing my drawing that was specifically made for halloween to something completely unrelated.
However I have some points that might help me to comprehend your logic:
Are both cartoons? Why, yes both are.
Are both using the same topic? No, one is just a fan art of Leni as a vodoo doll, the other is about a dire situation in the wilderness, heck, even the holiday is different (halloween and valentine).
Are they scary? Halloween drawings are intended to be scary but I do not find my Leni drawing scary at all (disturbing at best) also I do not find the episode you showed me scary at all (thrilling at best)
