Description Starcraft 2: Zurvan WIP
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!
Animated by Jay Hathaway and Chip Carle

These images show some of the development stages Zurvan went through during HotS. The immediate challenge was Zurvan's size on screen and all the different things he needed to be able do. While being controllable, cliffwalking, and having a Godzilla showdown with another Primal Ancient were cut from the campaign, his sheer size still required a solid month of work.

Good eye, Hazeem was the placeholder name of the Primal Zerg who controlled the opposing base in this mission, before the name was changed to "Brakk".Ā

Thanks you for explain so this mean initially Brakk diden't order to his packs to destroy the meat but to take it, this mean initally was planed a primal Drone or something like that for carry the meat?

Yep, a Primal Drone would take it to another Primal titan who would later fight Zurvan.Ā

It's a shame the titan fight got scraped it would have been so amazing to play or at least having it as a cutscene, actually is a shame Zurvan decided to get killed instead of becoming a playable part of your team. Mengsk would be still soiling his pants even after death XD so did the other titan got designed?

...hey look is the overmind... that is suposed to be in dead Aiur... and the other was in Char even deader?

Infested Zurvan was also kicked around as an idea, returning in grand fashion on the final Korhal mission. We had to move on from that idea as well.

I feel sad it's taken me until now to recognize the Overmind model at the bottom of that pit.

I can see that the primals in this early stage had a base with minerals, did they originally had workers and more building than the primal hive?

Boarguts In reply to SasoriFanXD [2013-03-23 21:56:03 +0000 UTC]

Well observed, you are correct about the Primal Base. Most of the art needed for a fully realized Primal base was cut due to time constraints.

Awesome work. Zurvan was a cool character and an amazing creature design - probably my favorite element of the expansion campaign. It's great to be able to see the concept work that went into creating him here (and all the other units and beasties too!).

I have a question looking at his untextured model - his arms look like they're done as individual segments. Was his entire limb textured as a single piece, or was a single segment created and textured and then duped out to make up the limb? I'm always looking for ways I can save texture space and re-use elements wisely.

Boarguts In reply to GoldenYak [2013-03-23 21:54:46 +0000 UTC]

The arm is actually a solid mesh, the segmented look is all faked. The limb is textured as a single piece!

They scrapped being able to use this dude in one mission as well as a godzilla showdown? There's only one word for that. FAIL!

Hell I'd love to have played that and the fact they pulled something like that is kinda sad really. The only time we see this dude in action is when he barfs units and lightning at you. I'd have liked to see him in action against an army and then see him thwack it out with another Primal Ancient. That way his betrayal would have actually hurt the player more and it would show the kind of fire power Kerrigan was up against in the battle.

I absolutely agree. The unfortunate side effect of running out of time, or in this case going so big at the idea stage is cutting those features to make a ship date. Zerus still delivers an experience which was a huge undertaking to develop. It is one of the most involved new worlds we built, and I keep wishing we had 2 more missions to indulge Zerus and really immerse the player in that world.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

EvilCleric In reply to Boarguts [2013-03-27 01:39:06 +0000 UTC]

The Zerus missions were fun and I loved the look of the place so I wouldn't have minded a few more missions. I mean hell this is the homeworld of the Zerg and the player just learned what the zerg is supposed to be instead of what it currently is. Plus the Primals could have used a lot more background. I mean they seemed to have a lot of units coming our way for a simple "Pack".

That reminds me. One thing that confused me was the Primal Pack Leaders were each unique, but they each had a ton of zerg that were basically just palette swapped versions of your own units with the exception of the primal ultralisk that looked like the love child of a tyrannosaur and King Kong. I understand that making a whole new army with different mechanics would have been a right pain in the arse, but why didn't they use units that you don't use as often like Brutalisk or hell the Omegalisk.

Boarguts In reply to EvilCleric [2013-03-28 06:07:24 +0000 UTC]

Sadly this was another time issue, we were hopping to get ahead of the curve by having so many components for the Primals, but they ended up looking very similar which is why retextured swam zerg appear.

The original concepts of Slivan had very reminiscent minions that echoed their pack leader, funny how that pack leader didn't get time for a unique model!

Godzilla showdown with another Primal was cut from the campaign?!? So many tears
Fantastic work all around, would have liked to be able to see the "real-life" size comparison in the mission a little better but I understand that it isn't really possible.
