Description Starcraft 2: Protoss Robotics Facility
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!

The Robotics Facility was a more difficult revamp to complete. The Protoss Starport had new intersting animations which transformed while unit production occured. The intention was to make the other unit producing buildings also transform in some way. Updating the old design and deciding how to alter the shapes so transformation could occur was somewhat forced but eventually accomplished. We achieved that goal but I can't help thinking that another revision coudl really make this building into something visually stunning and also functional.

It does look nice as it is, but you've made me curious--if you had the time to do the additional revision, how would you have changed the design, assuming you're allowed to tell us. I'd like to know what kind of animation(s) you had in mind for this building now that you've mentioned it.

Oh certainly. This building it a bit too logical in the transformation. A redo would be more organic.

This building looks SO different than its SC1 counterpart. I remember the old one looking like an oddly shaped (yet still awesome looking) building with, I think, are windows and some sort of massive bent cylindrical thing on top. What ideas did you have in mind when you said that this could've been worked on more?

The Protoss were difficult to update, we didn't get much time to explore their potential so we ended up just rehashing alot of old material. This Robotics Facility is somewhat of an elaborate reimagining, but it didn't hit the mark I was looking for and we never had a chance to revisit it.

I see, but since you're working on HotS now is there a possibility that you'll be given more time improving the look of the protoss like here in the Robo, or will the existing structures remain as is?

Most likely the building will remain as-is. As much as I'd like to improve some things with one more pass, there are other (new) things that need to be done!

I really really liked the redesign of the Robo Bay. A huge improvement of the static buildings of SC1 days. Well done.

I'm still on the fence with this one. Most of the intention for the new building designs came from the Protoss Starport update. I really wanted to see more moving components and transformation on the Protoss and it was a bit forced when we did this building.

I thought it was a nice surprise seeing the robo facility moving and transforming for the first time. Well I still think its awesome. Plus the added bonus that it makes Immortals and Colossi

I love the redesigns for the Protoss structures, you did a fantastic job of making them look more elegant and advanced. Although the new designs for the buildings seemed very out of place on the Zeratul mission where you returned to Aiur, but then again everyone was dieing to have Starcraft 2 come out and you really couldn't spend too much time making slight variations for one mission I suppose.

I agree, you make a valid point. The logic presented to us was that Protoss structures were intended to always look they way they do in Starcraft 2. It was a bit of a ret-con on our part which we didn't officially state.

I love how many of your posts have ideas of doing another visual revision, gives me hopes that either HotS or LotV will look spectacular and last another decade.

Thanks for the very kind words! I beleive there is always room for improvement, especially in game art which is a meduim that constantly evolves and changes. I wish I could post the things that are behind the scenes now, the art in HotS is already looking fantastic!
