Starcraft 2: Zerg Evolution ChamberModeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted park!
Animated by Jay Hathaway
The Evolution Chamber was a focal point of many visual design changes which carried through to the entire range of Zerg structures. The classic Starcraft 1 design of the Evolution Chamber was odd and simplistic, so the first pass made the building look much more agressive. Although very intersting, other Zerg buildings started looking less impressive than the Evolution Chamber which was a problem. The Evolution Chamber's role is simple race upgrades, it shouldn't look more impressive than the buildings that unlocked technology for the more advanced Zerg creatures.
The intent to dramatically redesign the Evolution Chamber was decided once the Lurker Den was created. The two buildings looked almost identical which was unacceptable. At the time the Lurker Den represented an advanced Zerg technology and it shouldn't be confused with the Evolution Chamber. The redesign followed through by updating the Starcraft 1 appearance once again but with a more humble visual matching the rest of the Zerg buildings.
Ironically, after all the fuss about mellowing out the design of the Evolution Chamber, the Lurker, and Lurker Den were cut from the game.

I love the asymmetry and ribcage look in the middle.

I noticed in the death animation there's a dino-like skull underneath where purple sacks are. I thought that was really interesting.

Steve Provost did all sorts of great little detail things like that on the Zerg deaths! He is a skilled butcher.

that's too bad, I really dug the old sc2 evolution chamber design
it was really unique and fitted as a building that represented the race really well

Understandable, the look was really primal and edgy, which was a good thing for the Zerg. It was a bummer we lost the old version of the Evolution Chamber and the Lurker Den in the same update process.

I like this new look for the fungal colony, er.. evolution chamber. It has the features of many zerg creatures, and a certain redundancy that matches the idea of slow evolution and mutation over many cycles.
