Description
Something different from all the usual space marines.I wanted to try an illustration that told more of a story that isn't just people shooting at things off screen.
Also I wanted to try doing more post-processing on the image once I had finished painting the image. The effects are all achieved with adjustment layers (which can be found on the bottom row of the layer's window in photoshop). These can help push the value range, colour balance or even change/replace whole sections of colour in the image. Very useful for getting that little bit more out of any paintings done.

Thank you! While this is simply a work of fantasy, I can see where you are coming from with the suggestion to make the breastplate a historical one.

Looks like the only one happy about the transaction is the merchant. They probably felt ripped off but needed whatever they were purchasing for their quest or mission.

I'm impressed you managed to do female/feminine styled plate armour that also manages to look practical

Thanks! It was a slow process of referring to real life examples of plate armour and trying to make it as form fitting as was practical.

I like her armour, practical but not too restricting.

Thanks! That was the plan, combine gambeson armour with plate to create something that was in between the two.

Thank you! Getting the reflections right was one of the hardest parts of the whole image.

yeah it is , without it there is no armor at all,
i wonder is there some-kind of a rule you follow to get the reflections right ?

Bobot073 In reply to taemart [2018-05-20 14:35:06 +0000 UTC]
No "rules" per-say.
Chrome like reflections are essentially 100% specular highlights. A brief look at your work tells me that you use blender in some of your work. I would often mock up scenes in blender and render them in order to figure out where the light goes and how it interacts with specific geometry.
So in this case I would setup a sphere with other objects around it and give it a Material using the Principled BSDF shader in cycles render with the specular and metallic settings set to 1. Then I would take the time to observe how the objects reflect off the mirror like material and use it as reference while I paint.
Also it would be useful to buy a mirror ball handy in real life for the exact same reason.
I try to be exact as possible, but sometimes the values/composition don't really work out. So I would fudge the reflections so that certain details remain clear or certain details become more interesting.
Hope that helps!

yeha it does , actually
but some times it becomes hard to apply it, i use blender only for human faces shading

keep experimenting more with blender! Its amazing tool, not just for modelling, but also for understanding light, geometry, perspective etc.
Highly recommended!

To me this couldn't be any clearer. This is a historically themed picture and we see one of the most famous commanders in all military history: The French teenager girl who put France on path to win the Hundred Years' War: Jeanne d'Arc. She had quite a job with convincing ill-disciplined, hard-nosed and war-weary veteran soldiers to follow her but she managed and did a marvellous job at it. This image shows her tackling those wild men. Heard about one of the officers, he used to pray to the Lord in the shape of military orders: "God, now do for La Hire what La Hire would do for You if You were a soldier and I was God!"

That is a very cool interpretation of the painting! Thank you for sharing that bit of history about Jeanne d'Arc.

This is an interesting picture that makes me think of what story may be behind it. The woman is obviously a mercenary knight of some sort. Are they guys merchants? Are they paying her off for a job well done or is beard laughing at the thought of quilted jacket (the boss) giving her money for doing their bidding? Given the size of that sword, probably the last mistake they'll ever make!
It's very comic-style but that doens't make it bad. Indeed, the high-end graphic novel feel of the art is what makes me automatically think about what narrative it is telling us.

More context is clearly required! I might have to paint more of this mercenary knight in the future.

In any case, Thanks!

The idea in my head while painting was that she was turning in a relatively minor bounty.
