What started out as a photo study turned into something 40k.I have always been fond of the Kasrkin design, so I tried to incorporate some of that into the stormtrooper featured here.Β
The Tempestus Scions certainly look more gothic(?) but now they feel significantly different from the rest of Imperial Guard. (Although thinking about it a bit more, that is probably the point.)
Reference photo was from an airsoft player, N.Ran on instagram.
Edit: Before I forget, the next most obvious reference point, from my point of view, for the Tempestus Scions would of course be JinRoh: Wolf Brigade.

He's gonna have a hard time operating those controls on his left arm.Β (Imagine your own arm on the far side of an assault rifle's pistol grip.)
Great art, though; your rendering style echoes of Shusei Nagaoka, but your composition is much more dynamic.
I don't know how this particular 40K world works, but it might be more grounding to "dirty things up" a bit.Β Make them look used...and abused.
That said, I'm more partial to gear that look shiny and new.

For sure, all the things you have pointed out are quite correct. (The arm unit on the left and the need for more grit and dirt.)
I remember back when I was doing this piece, the focus was on getting the lighting as correct as possible. Less on getting the functional aspects of the design and weathering in place.Β
Nowadays I try to keep all those aspects in mind as I work on illustrations. Hopefully it is reflected in the more recent works that I have already done.

I prefer the Kasrkin over the new Tempestus Scions. althought the old imperial stormtrooper models looked a little more uniform with the Imperial guard
