“So, this is why you told me to dress in running clothes?” Carly shook her head. “So we can run from the big scary giant?”

“That’s right,” Lauren said, bending low to stretch out her leg muscles. “Try to make it look good – like you’re really scared.”

“I won’t have to pretend. Look at the size of her, Lauren. She could squish us into paste on the bottom of her foot!”

Lauren chuckled. “Such a little drama queen. Alex isn’t going to hurt us. When it happened to Eric, it was entirely his fault.”

Carly stared at her sister, as understanding dawned. “That’s how Eric broke his leg? He got stepped on by his daughter?”

“Of course not. He got so freaked when she was chasing us, he ran right out of the room and fell down the stairs.” Lauren jogged in place, shaking out her arms to limber them up. “Notice that today the bedroom door is closed so we can’t get out and hurt ourselves.”

“Okay, tinies,” Alex said in an authoritative tone, as she got to her feet. “You better start running, or the giant is gonna get ya!”

Lauren broke into a jog, dodging around a pink Barbie convertible. “Better get moving, sis,” she called over her shoulder, amusement in her voice. “The giant’s gonna get us!”

Alex giggled. “Yeah! Run, tinies! Run!”

“Oh, for god’s sake,” Carly grumbled, as she ran around the Barbie car and headed after her sister. “I can’t believe this is really happening.”

A moment later, when Alex’s footfalls began thudding across the floor toward her, the vibrations thrumming up through her own shoes as she ran, Carly had an epiphany.

This was really happening.
