“Hey, Lauren!” Carly called. “Wait up! You got a head start and she’s going to catch me!”
“No way!” Lauren called over her shoulder. “It’s not my fault you’re so slow. Besides, why are you following me? We should split up to divert her attention.”
Carly swerved around a rowboat-sized, pink sneaker, and decided to head off to the right, at a ninety degree angle to her sister’s path. Maybe Lauren was right; it would be harder for Alex to capture both of them if they were running in different directions.
Carly just hoped Alex would follow Lauren instead of her.
Surprisingly enough, that’s exactly what happened. Carly sensed the giant girl’s immense form moving off to Carly’s left, her long strides gaining on her tiny mom as she ran toward the far wall.
When, a moment later, Carly heard her sister’s high-pitched, giggly screams, she knew Lauren had been caught.
Better her than me, Carly thought, as she darted beneath the nightstand, noting that she didn’t even have to duck to get beneath it.
She grinned.
Being little had its advantages.
