About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

There's over a thousand comments here and it'd take ages to scroll to the end to check if this has been asked, so sorry if it has.
Anyway, DeviantTidy isn't compatible with FireFox 3. Is this going to be fixed sometime soon? Surfing the site feels really weird now.

Im using the deviantTIDY scripts in Opera and this message keeps popping up. How can I get it to only show once?
[link]
Is it an Opera problem?

BoffinBrain In reply to anonymous-bot [2008-06-15 16:21:25 +0000 UTC]
Yes, Opera doesn't support the Greasemonkey command to save user settings, so Opera will never be able to save your options or remember when it was installed.
When I have more time I plan to look into this in more detail and write some Opera-specific load and save functions so the scripts can be ported over without problems.

After FF3 Offically comes out, will this be updated so it's compatible? I love it, but can't use it on RC2, so.. just curious if it will be updated for FF3 sometime after its release.

As soon as I have time to look into secure updates, it will be done! For the time being, if you want to use it in FF3 then you can install Stylish (compatible already) and load the stylesheet.

When I click the "Add yours" link at the top of comments, I cannot select a mood.

The mood selector on the comment box is buggy, and that seems to affect everyone - not just those using extensions. That means the 'comment box at the top' will only have a working mood selector if the comment box at the bottom of the page loaded correctly. Refreshing the page often helps.

The comment box the bottom seems to load fine. Even after a refresh its just the top one that has problems.

I'll need more details. Which mood box? Do you mean the mood selector? On what type of page are you seeing the problem: deviations, userpages, film etc.?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
anonymous-bot In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-09-04 22:10:48 +0000 UTC]
Yes I mean the mood selector. I notice the problem on deviations.
Same problem as before.

BoffinBrain In reply to anonymous-bot [2008-09-05 22:17:21 +0000 UTC]
Ah, sorry, I didn't realize this was a problem you had talked about before. I bet the reason why the selector doesn't work is because dA's stuff doesn't like simply being cloned, which is what I do to move the comment box. Maybe if I move the one from the bottom then it'll work.

I'm unable to download the .xpi for this extension, and GreaseMonkey/Stylish aren't available for FF3 RC1 (from what I've seen) yet.
So, if you're able to rectify the problem with that link, that would be awesome

I'm using Stylish with FF3 right now. I'm also using Greasemonkey, with a version hack. The download link is working fine for me but indeed dT isn't ready for FF3 yet.

I love the theme although I'd like to see it without these ugly, aliased corners .
BTW the link to the Firefox extension doesn't seem to work.

But the aliased corners are a beloved part of dA.
The link to the extension works fine for me. Firefox may prevent you at first for security reasons - you will need to add the domain to your safe list.

There is a Greasemonkey addon being made for IE7 but it isn't the full thing, so userscripts might not work on it.

BoffinBrain In reply to justjakk [2008-05-28 11:08:58 +0000 UTC]
v5 is the current version of the dA website. Pages that look old and grey like the message centre and the journal pages are v4 (the last generation) and haven't been updated yet. So basically, the options like will appear on most pages.

I bet you've been asked this before but I'll just go ahead and ask.
This is the coolest thing ever but I can't for the life of me figure out how to make it play nice with Safari. I try and install it but it just downloads the file. Is it just not compatible?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to FlamelessNight [2008-05-17 08:00:16 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. Well, the extension is for Firefox users, but if you want to use it elsewhere, then you can download the CSS separately. Then, it's up to you to work out how to enable custom user stylesheets on your browser (I'm sure Safari supports them).

Solitude12 In reply to ??? [2008-05-10 03:10:01 +0000 UTC]
Maybe its just Firefox 3, but the zoom button is intertwining with the collect button (Collect with zoom icon). Without deviantTIDY, it's fixed. I also seem to be able to favorite my own deviations through the collect button which shouldnt even be there, but I suppose I shouldn't tell you about it... xD
If it's firefox 3, then I'll wait, if its not, then please fix
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Solitude12 [2008-05-10 04:10:02 +0000 UTC]
Indeed. I thought that was just a temporary issue. I've fixed the issue with the icon.
As for being able to collect your own stuff, I noticed that too! Funnily enough, you don't appear in the list of people that have added it to their favourites. What's really frustrating is that, because there's no way to properly add to favourites, there's no way to remove them.
