About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.

Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.

And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.

Features

  • More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
  • Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
  • Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
  • Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
  • Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
  • Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
  • Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
  • ...and many more!

Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.

FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.

Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

I don't think I ever commented on this dev after I finally figured how to install deviantTIDY. So I'll take this update as an opportunity to do so now.

It's awesome! By far my most favorite feature of it is the return of the expanded message count. The indents with comment replies is a great idea as well

I could go through all of the features. But it's mostly all the same. I like them and think deviantART is much more easy on the eyes while getting around. Congrats on the DD for it by the way, for it t'was well deserved!

Haven't seen one yet. But then again, I have a backlog of 300 deviations in my message centre.

There's only one simple reaction I can give you to this, and that is... F**k yeah!

It gives dAv5 back some of those lovely little features that we took for granted in previous versions, but were totally shat upon in this one!

I would say this is the most useful devation on the whole damn site!

Just one question.. is the "w00t" next to the deviation counter your doing, or deviantART's?

Some of the features seem nice, but I don't particularly like the widened homepage. You think you could add an options feature that lets users of this extension enable or disable certain features? I often use those links on the side to get to various parts of my account, and now that they're gone, I'm left wondering where the hell they went.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to dragon-architect [2007-07-08 02:43:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes, there are good and bad effects with removing such items. The benefit it that you see more deviations per line.

I cannot make such user options at the moment, but maybe I can in the future.

For your reference, all the links you see on the homepage bar are also available by clicking the dA button in the top-left corner of the screen. Assuming you know that, you shouldn't miss those links any more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragon-architect In reply to BoffinBrain [2007-07-08 03:17:35 +0000 UTC]

I do know that, but there's this sense of security in seeing those same links on the right hand side as well. I use the links on both sides, just whichever my mouse arrow is closest to, and I've gotten by fairly well with just four per line. >>

BoffinBrain In reply to dragon-architect [2007-07-08 03:56:25 +0000 UTC]

I see. Well, my recommendation for you is to use the CSS file with Stylish. That way, you can choose exactly which code you do and don't want to use. See the description for a link to the Stylish extension if you don't know about it. Uninstall deviantTIDY first.

If you succeed in that, then reply to me and I'll tell you which line to remove so you can have your links back.

dragon-architect In reply to BoffinBrain [2007-07-08 18:16:48 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I've got the CSS in instead of the extension. Now, before you tell me, let me take a stab at guessing to see if I can figure this out just from the code. Under the "Front Page" header, that first line where it says "{display:none;}"... is that the bit of code I'm looking for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to dragon-architect [2007-07-08 21:35:18 +0000 UTC]

Correct! Remove the line that contains '#home-bar'. Hope you like the rest of the improvements.

MissingHorcrux In reply to ??? [2007-07-07 23:27:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so nice and minimalistic. <3

I particularly like how the Reply button is directly underneath the avatar. That's just plain smart.

I'm not sure if I like the Indent Guide or not. It seems like a useless feature to me, unless I don't know what I'm talking about (which is probably true).

What I would like to see is instructions on how to use it for browsers like K-Meleon and Internet Explorer, if they are compatible.

Thanks for the submission, and congrats on the DD! This really deserves it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to MissingHorcrux [2007-07-08 01:33:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot.

The indent guides are useful when you see a long mess of nested comments on news articles or in the forums. If you hover over the reply, it'll help you see which comment was the parent. If you hover over the indent line itself, you can then use your scroll-wheel to look up and down at that level. It can be useful if you like reading long arguments and such.

As for other browsers... If the browser supports user CSS files in any way then there should be a way to paste deviantTIDY into it. I'm sure there's help around for that.

Something's wrong with Chromeedit then. Have you checked to see if 'deviantTIDY 1.8' appears in the page footer?
