Description I've seen the mock-ups for v6 , and I've seen the beta website , and although there are some great ideas being implemented, the design leaves me deeply disappointed. It looks like we've gone backwards in time, to something like v3 (see the archives: [link] ). The page is too densely packed in some places, while in others there is too much blank space. The use of fills and borders and rounded edges makes things needlessly complex. The form controls for the search box look like they come from an old Mac OS, tinted green.

I had actually started working on some designs since before the screenshots, so I thought I might as well show it rather than stay silent. It combines my own ideas with the things I've already seen so I don't take credit for every single detail in the design. To avoid pasting labels across the entire image, I'll describe the interface below.

Theme
The design stays reasonably close to v5 in terms of shape and colour - I much prefer the grey-green over the strong green chosen for the main header of the proposed v6. Still, I have made the green of the main header here slightly stronger.
One thing I always found odd about v5 was the way the content funnels in from the top, leaving large unused margins at the sides, so I changed that.
For the main body, I've chosen a background color somewhere between the dAv5 dark pages and the dAv5 light pages - hopefully a good compromise between traditional dark colours, and hurting people's eyes on deviation pages with white backdrops.

Header
As proposed by the v6 concepts, and already done in the Chatrooms, the deviant bar is at the very top, which is beneficial in several ways. This is an example of what logged out users see. To see what it looks like when logged in, see the second concept .
The logo, navigation and search looked rather out of place, floating around in sea of green in the proposed v6 beta. I'd rather see them in a common container, and it's here where I show off the stronger tint of the color scheme with an attractive smooth gradient.
The icons, from left to right, are Browse, Shop, Collections, News, TodAy, Chat, Forum and Help & FAQ. The final button is the customize button, which acts like this: [link] This may only appear to logged-in users. When you hover over an icon, the associated text will appear in the space above it to explain what it is. Having just icons looks better and also allows you to have more links on your header row.
The search box in the v6 beta really annoyed me with its ugliness. This one looks much the same as v5, but smoothed out like the rest of the design, and including the drop-down box which will allow context-insensitive searches. Advanced search? I'll show you that concept on another screenshot.

Front Page Content
Imagine a new user coming to dA for the first time. All they see is a bunch of pictures and a big Join button on the right. That hardly helps explain dA's purpose. Here, the company's motto and tagline appear at the very top, along with the mascot.
On the left, the thumbnail streams appear as usual, but they can also be expanded/contracted if desired. The Browse button provides extra help for those wishing to see more art. This is replaced by the Customize button when you're logged in.
On the right, we have news articles! Under that is the Join section, much the same as before. Below that is the Newsletter subscription box, which currently only shows up on Shop pages. Also included here is a link allowing users to go to the About Us page to find out yet more about dA (hopefully the v6 About pages will show more than just a list of the administrators).

Footer
It is proposed that thumbnail streams and the entire contents of the Today page be included in the footer of v6 - [link] Come on now; that's rather bloated. Now, perhaps this information can appear on the Front Page, but for all other pages the footer should be consistent and minimal - if people really want to see polls and deviousness awards, they will go to the dedicated Today page. As done in the v6 beta, the footer links are nicely segregated on the bottom line. Where did the Partners list go? I don't know... I hope those partners don't get mad that it's gone.

I'm really glad you think the footer is too bloated, plus it takes a long time to load with all that content. It really just doesn't need to be there.

Anyways - very nice!

This, I like!

My only point is that with so much grey-green it looks a bit... depressing.

Then again, I'm one of the ones who actually likes the new colour scheme...

As long as Daily Deviations would be expanded by default to give them more exposure, I think this is a much better layout than v6 beta - the current one wastes so much space that you've used to good effect! And you got rid of that stupid oversized footer!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Davecheesefish [2008-05-12 11:55:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that oversized footer is going to be a waste of bandwidth for dA users, as most people will just have them collapsed anyway. The only place where that information would be mildly interesting is on the front page itself, and on the Today pages, but that doesn't mean it needs to be put in the footer, even then!

pextro In reply to ??? [2008-05-10 03:17:54 +0000 UTC]

Too many gradients. And the browse area background needs to go. It's too prominent.

I don't like the fact that the top login bar has rounded corners. If the login bar is going to overlap the rest of the header, it should be a rectangle... it just looks silly.

I prefer DA's current icons, because they're simpler. Your icons look like they've been designed to be used as 32x32 or larger.
It'd be nice to have text next to them as well, as not everyone's been using deviantART since forever ago.

Sorry, but *sigh*.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to pextro [2008-05-10 04:12:10 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough. It's all a matter of taste, of course. In contrast, what do you think of the current v6 beta?

BTW, the name of the link will appear above the icon in the navigation bar when you hover over them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pextro In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-05-11 13:41:05 +0000 UTC]

I know there are a lot of mixed feelings out there about the v6 beta, but I really like it. A few minor adjustments would be good.

With the links, I still think text + icon is more appealing and usable than icon + hover-revealed text. The user should be able to see (and comprehend) all the items immediately, without having to move their mouse over a pile of icons, pausing to read each one.

Plus, the icon style... You're moving away from deviantARTs simple/cute/sleek design tradition. They're SUPPOSED to be pixelly and simple... Easy to understand at a glance. When you go for shadowy 3d looking stuff with such a tiny icon size, you lose that...

Sorry to add another point to my list... but its constructive, I promise.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

BoffinBrain In reply to pextro [2008-05-11 19:04:59 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I really appreciate the honest crituque. It's a rarity! I often worry about the fine line between improving things in a very objective manner, and making things better according to my personal tastes. I think using icons without text is one of those difficult decisions. On the one hand, the use of space and the overall aesthetics are far better, but usability and intuitiveness are compromised by a small amount.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

pextro In reply to pextro [2008-05-11 13:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Actually hold up a sec... I take back that bit about the icons... You made the icons right? so you probably got used to them as you made them. I guess when I first saw it, I was a little :S because they're a little squished together, and new to my brain etc.

I actually think they look pretty damn good. Maybe just turn down the shadows of the clock and shop a tiny bit?

I think I've stared at the design too many times, and it's started to grow on me.

thegnat In reply to ??? [2008-05-09 20:06:38 +0000 UTC]

This is a LOT better than what they've come up with...

I was pretty disappointed too with a lot of the features they "added". The home page being a Browse page? I mean, Come on!

This is brilliant. I like how they have the option to expand/collapse channels to keep it clean as well as the news articles on the side. It has the promotion, newsletter sign up and sign up right at the tip of their fingers.

This is definitely a design I'd like to see on the front page.

maybe they should have done a version with an other name, like [link] ... The layout is really olive green, but there are a lot of nice things in the way they built the iphone site. Although the films don't seem to play yet...

As far as I'm aware, iPhones only just started being able to use Flash, so there will probably still be major teething problems with multimedia.

Of course, the problem with subdomains on dA is that they're all taken by usernames. ~iphone

NEOkeitaro In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-05-11 17:52:45 +0000 UTC]

pfff, stupid ghost accounts...
Well, actually, you don't need to have flash to see videos on an iphone : if the file is a quicktime file, then safari can read it. You can see now a growing number of websites providing iphone-adapted videos. But maybe the Iphone v2 will have flash, or at least flash lite... (let's admit it : internet without flash is only half the fun...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to NEOkeitaro [2008-05-11 17:59:53 +0000 UTC]

Mmm... Of course. Shamefully, it's either movies inside Flash, or DivX here for the time being. It's funny how websites only really started taking mobile web browsing seriously after the iPhone. I fear that developers will make their mobile apps work perfectly on the iPhone without checking it on other mobile phones.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NEOkeitaro In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-05-11 18:04:33 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. But there is a reason why mobile web browsing is taken more seriously now : if you look at the numbers, Iphone has been a little "revolution" in the small world of web browsing, and since its release the mobile web traffic has increased much... mainly due to the Iphone traffic... but of course, it shouldn't have this kind of "monopolistic" influence in the way that web developers code their mobile websites... Do Iphone versions of website work nicely on other terminals, btw ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to NEOkeitaro [2008-05-11 19:01:37 +0000 UTC]

I don't know. What I do know is that there are still very primitive browsers out there that support barebones HTML and images. One would hope not to have to support those by now! What I also believe is that any mobile web app should be a proper subset of those technologies used on the regular web, so that should mean that any mobile page should look and work OK in a full-size PC browser. This sadly isn't the case for the iPhone dA.

I think it might help if the +'s and -'s on the left had a little box or circle around them to show that they're clickable and not just text.

But yes, this definitely looks better than v6. That green is killing me.

BoffinBrain In reply to Pyritie [2008-05-09 19:24:04 +0000 UTC]

Indeed; it was just a thought that came to mind. Iconifying the links would make them more intuitive and easier to click.

"This News Article Is Awesome" with 1337 s : Great attention to detail.

Now for the critique. Would you click on the - or + to minimize/maximize the sections (e.g, if you wanted to see DDs but not Popular)? It looks like if you click on them, it would only take you to that specific browsing category. Other than that, it looks good.
